A-904 Transmission

I know I need to remove or at least drop the transmission to gain access to the front oil pump seal. Yay me! My question is how do I pull the oil seal without taking the trans apart? The Service Manual indicates one of those MANY specialty tools that are all over the service manual is there a replacement or some other tool or do I need to disassemble the trans to get at it? Any gotchas I should know about while doing this?

The torque converter snout seal? I'm pretty sure I just used a screwdriver to pry it out. Either that or one of these, don't need anything fancy.

Yep, it pops out like any other seal with a screw driver, small pry bar, seal puller.

Nothing special to put it back? How do I get it seated around the shaft?

Be very careful popping it out so you don't gouge the pump housing or the bushing. While it is out inspect the converter snout for cracks and the pump bushing for wear.

If you want to get real fancy installing it, take your seal to the hardware store and get a piece of pipe that is just slightly smaller than the OD of the seal. It will make a great seal driver. :D

I may have gotten lucky. I was checking the fluids today and was a little low so I added some trans fluid came around to check oil and so a fairly large puddle under the radiator. I believe I may have found my leak. I replaced the hard lines with softlines and the hose clamp did not appear tight enough. So I think it was blowing back and looking like the main seal.

Lucky you indeed. Use EFI hose clamps, they work better for higher pressure stuff.

Yes, lucky find, no one wants to drop a tranny and find nothing.
I definitely second the use of fuel injection clamps. Also, when connecting to a hard line, use a brake flare tool to add a small bubble to the end of the line. Makes a better seal and keeps the rubber from slipping off.
Some fuzzy pics, you can see the bubble on the end of the 90 and the type of clamp.
