They go under the backing plate to the axel tube? ......I am sure that this is right, but laying here wanting to go work on tha rear with a headache and warm forehead, is making me rethink the cold outside. I have green bearings on the new large bolt pattertn axels for the 8 3/4.....so the o ring eliminates the metal gasket there.anyhow, just rechecking to see what the readers say.

Andy is that foam kind of like the sheet foam used for packing things for shipping?

Well why not cut your own from that material? I think that it is used for a simple seal to keep water out of the joint (axle housing to backing plate).
Even my '53 Ford had same type of seal at that place.

I think I messed up this post. I wanted to make sure of the location of that seal/gasket. I have it. Just being over cautious. In my manic mind. Lol

Pretty sure the metal gasket goes between the backing plate and the end of the akle housing. The foam gasket goes between the bearing retainer and the backing plate. At least that is the way I just did the rear in my 66 Valiant.

I use metal in both locations, and if I don't over-torque them (bad habit of mine) I can get several axle swaps on the same shim gaskets.
