that used to be a popular way to get off the line drag racing before stall converters and trans brakes. if your tranny is in good shape you could probably get away with it a couple times before you spit out a u-joint or blow the trans.

Yeah, they used to do that until transmissions started exploding.

Can you do it? Sure.

Is it smart? Not even.

The sprag clutch takes a beating when you do a neutral drop like that. We've talked about it in the context of burnouts. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=284350

As others have said, early super stock racers did it,but Ronnie sox was badly injured, and lost part of his foot in a trans explosion. When the over-running clutch fails, the front clutch drum rotates BACKWARD at 3 times the engine speed, and could fail, grenading the trans.

Years ago(71-73 ish) Plymouth did a television comercial with a Fury under full throttle going from drive to reverse several times while smoking the tires while the anouncer stood next to it telling about the Torqueflite transmission durability.Chances are the car wasn't "stock". Heck it maybe somewhere on YouTube.

Chances are it was a 318/904/open diff. I was with a buddy in his Gramma's '71 Fury III when he decided to do that one night. Floored it in neutral, dropped it into reverse, smoked the tire backwards until it almost stopped, dropped it into drive and smoked it forward, repeated 4 or 5 times.

Yes, I was in fear of pieces coming through the floor, but none did.

727 would have exploded for sure.

Her 2 grandsons put that car through holy hell. What finally did it in was when younger one drove over a road sign and tore off a trans cooler line.

I used to do that in our family '62 Fury 318. Or worse, put it in reverse and get up some speed, then push the "1" button and floor it! Left a cool "J" shaped stripe!
And after I was done with the car, my sister abused it through high school. It finally died, with over 200,000 miles on the clock!
