Just a FYI. I pulled the oil pump off of a 1982 truck motor that I have on the stand and guess what i found. Yessiree Bob, the oil pump and cam gears were almost completely gone. This was out of a bone stock hydraulic motor. The engine was still running when I got it but it would have failed very soon. I had hoped to send the cam out to be reground for my truck. I guess it will now head to the scrap pile.

Was it the original pump?

Yes it was. And my sons 85 pick-up was the original too as far as we knew.

If you buy a new one, get one that has the gear pinned to the shaft. The gear spun off the pump in my 74 Duster, replaced it with one from O'Reilly. That spun off in 96 days, out of warranty. Grabbed the old one from my 71 truck, who knows how many miles on it. That is the one still on it today. It is pinned. Why would you scrap that motor? The Duster motor ran for a full 5min. with NO pressure at all. Motor is still good. I swear.

I think he is scrapping the cam, not the whole motor.

Wonder what oil was used? Can't imagine stock parts would posdibly have the cam gear hobbed on the wrong angle like we've suspected on aftermarket cams.

Another mystery from the Covalt clan. :?

+1. I would be very interested to learn what oil was used and what the maintenance history (or lack thereof) was of the motor.

Nope, just the cam. I have seen 2 mid 80's truck engines with the same issue. I know who had the latest one for the last 2 years but no idea who had it for the 28 years before that. The other one came out of Arizona and was an E-Bay purchase, so I have no way of knowing their service history.
On a happier note I just pulled the pump on a 1972 engine and the cam and oil pump gears look like new! They will go into my new engine for my race car after it gets reground
