I had a problem yesterday my truck got "stuck" in 3rd gear but the really odd thing was I was able to shift it into 1 and reverse at the same time :? .

Luckily I was able to crawl under it and push the 3rd and OD lever back to the neutral position and got it to work again. I took the boot and plastic cover off and had a look at the shifter and the linkage rods I sprayed some pb blaster on the shifter to soften up the dried grease (BTW there's a zerk down there) and it seemed to shift easier. However and I had never taken note of how sloppy the shifter feels. When I was in there I saw that there is no hardware on the rods just cotter pins and there seems to be a lot of play in the linkage. My concern is that it will happen again at a most inconvenient time is there a way to tighten up the shifter or is it supposed to be sloppy?

You can disassemble and clean it, but chances are it will need to be rebuilt. Hurst still does it, not sure what it costs anymore.

I found a youtube video of the reassembly process of a hurst competition plus 4 speed shifter.

Are all hurst 4 speed shifters basically the same?

What parts wear out? I really don't see anything that would wear other than the shims and maybe the bushing.

Yes that video is pretty close, there is a plastic washer/spacer in the A-833OD versions and sometimes the steel shim spacers get dinged up...
You can rebuild yourself (cleaning it and putting new grease in between the plates will help lots)...The other item is to get a good set of clips and washers for the shift rods as they can be loosey-goosey and cause some 'mis-shift' problems. Brewers Performance used to carry a recondition kit for the shifter (and misc parts if you find something is missing, or the bayonet in the spring for reverse lockout has sheared it's nose off).

As long as you have some punches, a hammer, and a few other small tools and the diagram anyone with common sense can rebuild theirs easily (I renewed 2 of them in April for future use in my car.).

Good Luck,

Thank you for the lead on brewers performance.

I had a closer look at the shifter and linkage, the 3/OD rod is bent and binds ever so slightly so I think I found the cause of my problem. I'll unbend the rod so it doesn't bind and get a shifter linkage rod clip & washer package from brewers and see what it is like.

At one time Year ONe sold a rebuild kit for the Hurst shifters. Things need to be tight enough, and adjusted so that both arms are fully, and solidly in neutral at the same time.

they are just the middleman marking up a kit that is put together by someone else...FYI...Either way Brewers and Passon are the go to guys for A-833 parts.

I haven't got around to working on the linkage yet, I have a gravel driveway and a sheet of junk particle board I can work on so I don't like to get under there very often. This truck does a good bit of sitting so its just another task on a ever growing list of crap I should do.
