so with this artic like weather, pretty sure my coil went out. ( trouble light to spark plug wire side and ground, no light, sm. wires side lit up). so was wondering is it worth buying a $50 performance canister coil, will it bolt up and fit? and is there any upgrades to the ignition control module, or the whole ignition system? ordered stock replacement (wells) coil, but wonder if there's something better i can look at, or do. thanks

guess maybe just stick to cheapish stock replacement and get parts together to do gm ignition upgrade someday

You may use a low-priced GM HEI module, an ordinary E-core coil, and a relay, and you'll never look back!

If you decide to go for a new coil and keep the stok Mopar ECU, you may choose a coil that allows you to ditch the ballast resistor. If you use the search function and make a query for 'coil' by author 'aggresive ted', you'll find his recipe for using a high-voltage coil. You may also benefit from a set of new spark plug wires (and plugs), Magnecor is recommended.

Here are some quotes from Aggressive Ted:

Thanks Ted. How is good is your Dart running with no ballast? I'd like to try this as well.

It was a huge improvement in idle quality, getting full voltage and excellent spark plug color. When your driving short distances or idling in traffic for hours having a steady idle is really nice. Especially in bad weather when you have head lights, front defroster fans, wipers, radiator fans, radio, rear defroster, etc. going and the voltage is lower. It will idle at 550 rpm for hours in freeway traffic with out missing a beat. Before it use to stumble from time to time and a plug would load up. Never the same plug either....

The MOPAR ECU works fine with a full 12 volts as does the 3 ohm Pertronix HEI coil. It seems to be a excellent coil verses the MSD Blaster 2 and stock coils that I was running which would get too hot to touch. The HEI coil only gets warm where I have it mounted. The plugs last for years gaped at .045.

Not using the resistor the past 5 years or so and installing a 3 ohm coil is a good interim step to the GM HEI. I have a sheet of aluminum that bolts under the coil on the isolation mounts for the HEI and relay. It is ready to go when and if the MOPAR ECU dies.

Get a coil that is wound with the correct gauge wire for 3 ohms internal resistance from Pertronix with no built in resistors. They are a little over $30.00. There are many to choose from, oil filled, epoxy filled and HEI styles, and in chrome or black. Summit Racing, Jeg's or Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss/ ... ix%20coils

As with all thins you can make a ignition upgrade as expensive and complicated as you want.

I did the GM HEI upgrade for less than $50, the most expensive single part was the electronic distributor.

Well said! You can spend as much as you want. I did my upgrades in several steps. First the new 3 ohm canister stock style coil so I could ditch the ballast resistor. Then the better 3 ohm HEI style coil. 8 mm wires from Summit, Blue Streak cap, the longer MO-3000 rotor, distributor recurve, Then the HEI module and relay. I can run either one the MOPAR ECU or the Napa TP45 HEI module.

Click on the red link below to view the changes through the years. All good ones that provide good value and peace of mind!

Hiya
I came across this post and tried the search for "coil" and "agressive ted" but no results so I couldn't really read up on the modification.

I've got a Dart 71 with stock coil, ballast resistor but the regulator has been changed from the stock to a transistor one. I would like to get rid of the ballast. With the regulator set up I have can I just go and change the stock coil for the 3 Ohm Petronix coil? (but which petronix coil?)

thanks

EDIT: Nevermind, got to the HEI threads finally. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong. I could basically go as follows:
- Exchange coil for 3 ohm one, bypassing ballast resistor. Swapping sparks for NGK ZFR5N;
- Exchange points distributor with electronic one and put in a Mopar ECU (have a couple lying around at home), keep 3 ohm coil and sparks
- Swap Mopar ECU with GM HEI module, rewiring for the extra "pull", keep sparks

Any of their coils, chrome or black, canister or HEI style, oil filled or epoxy as long as it is 3 ohms.

Just take out the resistor and a do the jumper like I did, see the pictures in the red link below my name.

This is a great mod and makes for a much more dependable ride.

I agree with Ted. I have the same coil that he has and it has worked great. :D

Thanks for answer Ted. I've had a couple of very busy weeks at Med School and the Lab (what can I say the bloody life of an associate researcher) so the only thing I've managed to get done is getting rid of the metal gas tube that goes from the pump to the carb... gas not getting cooked, yay!
<img src="http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/280x200q90/912/RLfxuS.jpg" border="0">
As you can see my dad had already had the coil placed on the fender away from the block. Bought a 3 Ohm coil, haven't done the resistor bypass so I've not installed it yet. Anyway, I'm waiting on getting the electronic dizzy to start piecing together the system.

Has anyone tried the Pertronix Ignitor 1361A conversion kit?
