Vehicle: 1974 Duster, 225, equipped with a Holley 1945

I have tried two different stock air cleaner bases (both came with the car) and both interfere with the operation of the choke. The top choke linkage piece hits the bottom of the air cleaner housing and blocks the choke from moving. Is there a trick I am missing?

I looked through my FSM, and then dug around in the shop looking for the old '74 Pie Tin that came off the Hooptie. Couldn't find it. I remember the assembly had a fairly deep recess to clear linkages. I'll continue looking for it. It's there, or I gave it to somebody, 'cause I never throw those away. They are the first items to get crushed at wrecking yards.

It's possible, you don't have the correct pie tin. The air horn points toward the back of the battery, (Bad info, see below!). I'll keep digging. Been out working on the "Busted Slant" East.

Thanks. Both my lower air cleaner pans have the indents for the choke linkage, but both of the Holley 1945 carbs I have tried hit the bottom of the filter housing. Short term I guess I can stack some air horn gaskets on it to get the clearance I need, but i wonder why this isn't fitting. Maybe I wound up with a couple 1920 air cleaner housings? :shrug:

Ultimately the vehicle will be fuel injected, but it is carbed for now.

Orientation of the air cleaner changed in the early 70's sot for it to sit properly the orientation is as follows:

1973 Air Cleaner and Holley 1920 the intake/thermactor housing is rectangular point directly at the drivers side fender.

1974-1976 (and some F-bodies) Air cleaner and Holley 1945 the intake/thermactor is oval shaped, and should point straight at the battery/left headlight when installing. This puts the 'bump' in the correct spot to avoid the linkage and other things sticking out of the carb body...

If you've already oriented it like this, the 'bail' may not be correct for the carb (the one from a Holley 1920 isn't the correct height so that may cause an issue in installation).

Makes perfect sense Rob. I will check the bail out closely sine it is a somewhat snug fit. I have the air cleaner oriented correctly but it still sits about 1/8 of an inch too close to the choke linkage for the linkage to work properly.

Were there different air cleaners for the 1920 and 1945 carbs?

Yes, but the last Holley 1920 air cleaner was 1973, the 1974 model year+ got the Holley 1945 pietins...If I was able to crawl back to the back of my storage unit I could pull the 1973 tin and a 1974-1976 tin and see what the bottom looked like.

Another item to ask, does the carb airhorn have the gasket ring that the pie tin 'rim' sits on? (That's good for another 1/8-3/16" right there....)

Air horn gasket is present and accounted for. I think I am just going to stack two or three air horn gaskets together for now.

I suppose that in the 40 years since this vehicle was manufactured it is possible same someone swapped in a 73 or earlier 1920 air cleaner.

Makes me want to get going on the MAF efi conversion.
