hey guys i have a 1964 dart was running great then i went to start her the other day and she just wouldnt start. turns over i have power to starter, ignition, and coil. she acts like she wants to start when i let off the key any help i can get would be great

Get two, throw one in the glove box,if that solves the problem. Mine went out once and I had to hold the key in such a position that the motor would run without grinding the starter to pieces. Drove in Houston traffic 23mi. to work.

Two words... HEI conversion lol. Get rid of that pesky ballast altogether! But yea if the ballast doesn't fix it, could be the ignition switch itself failing or failed.

My truck was doing the exact same thing awhile back. It would crank and crank and nothing until i would go to let off the key after cranking and BOOM it would fire a couple times and die. Sometimes it would even start just off that momentary spark the rest of the ignition system was so healthy.

I replaced almost everything in the ignition path except ONE thing, the starter cable. The one running from the relay on the fenderwell down to starter. I grabbed it and moved it and when I did it sparked from being so corroded from the inside out. I changed it and it has'nt failed to start once since! I chased this problem for days in my spare time. I felt pretty dumb after putting in over ahundred bucks worth of parts including a new ignition switch.

Check for battery voltage at the coil positive while cranking the engine.
You problem sounds like starter relay to me, similar to ballast ressitor but opposite. Ballast resistor will fire while cranking and fail when the starter is released. Starter relay bypasses the ballast resistor during cranking sending battery voltage directly to the coil. Verify battery power to the coil during cranking first, then go from there.

If you have battery voltage at the coil during cranking then you will move onto the other ignition parts. Module and pickup coil are next to verify.
Points and condenser too of course, and coil itself.
