My '72 Scamp turn signal arm was sagging and going into left turn mode. Not realizing it was the metal strip spring in the switch that was worn out, I bought the $10 fix from Classic industries part #MD2142 and after installing the left rear light wouldn't work. I decided to get the whole new switch from CI part #MD2094 and when I plugged it in the rear lights went into emergency flasher mode. After contacting CI and finding out the switch should work for my car, I mapped out each wire and the old and new switches were identical. So giving up on the new parts I trimmed a 1/4" strip from the end of a putty knife and used that as a spring in the old switch. All is good again. Make sure you use the right stiffness in putty knives as they range from weak to stiff. The one I used was in the middle.

I love McGyver fixes from common household materials....it's really satisfying when you find or can make that special piece from stuff in your stash that fits the bill perfectly and was apparently lying around waiting for the right moment to be useful....

Yes, I agree. My problem is remembering where that part is you have had for 20 years that will fix it right up. My favorite fix was a friend (one that doesn't know the right end of a screwdriver) ran out of gas and then after refilling couldn't start up due to dirt sucked into the filter. I blew beer (all we had at the time:) backwards thru the loose fuel filter to clean it out. The truck started right up. Friend was amazed.
