 Post subject: Water Pump question

What he heck is this thing for? I see it more often than not, NOT hooked up but when it is hooked up, the pictures never show where the other end is going. from my Haynes and Chilton's manuals, I think it goes to the heater but not 100% sure. If it's not hooked up, is there a "gate" or "catch" inside that automatically shuts or closes if there's nothing there?

It wasn't originally hooked up on mine but that's not saying much. Quite a few things are missing or hooked up haphazardly.

That is the heater supply hose. It will need to at least be capped. If you want heat then the hose needs to be attached to that nipple. Look at the heating/cooling systems chapter of a true factory service manual. Use the Haynes and Chilton's manuals as doorstops or step stools.

The short one is for the head hose.

If you are going to cap the heater hose nipples (the one on the pump & the second is on the front of the cylinder head- pointing up & to the passenger side) then you'd do best by making your own "caps" out of some hose, a couple clamps, & large bolts or some other plug to seal the end of the hose. Most pre-made heater caps are unreinforced rubber which usually I see crack & fail in a year or so.

The short nipple on the pump is for the "bypass" hose that goes to the nipple on the underside of the front of the cylinder head- this hose must be in place.

Why? The only reason to cap it is to disable the heater in your car.

Well, one I'm in Southern LA, not much use for a heater and two, I don't believe the heater even works.

Here's a pic of the original water pump that I replaced (forgot I had it laying around).

As you can see, it doesn't look like anything has been attached to it in a long, long time. It's completely blocked with some calcium based gunk...

I will at some point in the future get the heater up and working but as for now, just to get the car started, I'll cap it. I wanted to make sure it didn't go to some integral cooling mechanism.

Understood. Looks like a prior owner ran hard water in the cooling system, didn't dilute the water with any kind of radiator fluid, and what you see is the calcium deposit left by running "hard" water through the cooling system.

If I were you, I would take a good look into the block while you have the water pump off and see what it looks like. If the calcium buildup has blocked off that opening in the pump then there is a high probability that calcium deposits have blocked portions of the water jacket in the head and the block. At the very least pull the thermostat housing and the thermostat and see what the head looks like. That kind of buildup is troubling.

I'm on the tail end of the build (not rebuild, just looked it over and did as much as I could) so I've looked at all those things. Replaced the thermostat and cleaned out where I could. I'm in the process of putting all the hoses back on and reconnecting the electrical.

I stupidly got myself into a situation where I am going to have to custom make a kickdown/throttle cable bracket holder thingamabob... But once I get that done, (hopefully) I'll be able to fire her up!

She wasn't in the best of shape and I'm sure a seasoned veteran wouldn't have given it a second glance but being a beginner, I didn't have much to lose and I didn't want to take on a critical build as my first project. In hindsight, I probably should have followed the opposite logic. Bought one that didn't need a ton of work and learned on it and improved it instead of essentially starting from scratch.

Oh well, live and learn. I'm sure it will be worth it once she's running and I did it all by myself...
