Hi everybody.

the stock pit arm on my 62 is pretty ratty and I don't think it will last long with its tattered remains of rubber boot. I figured I would simply be able to buy another, but this has turned into a much larger problem than I originally anticipated. I have learned that the replacement, Moog K7020, has been getting scarce since at least 2005, but the part for the 67-72 A bodies (K7074) is very available.

If the "steering box interchange is '62-'72 A and B-body, all engines, and the pitman arm interchange, (Moog K7020, obsolete), is '62-'66 A-body, all engines" (1), then what is the difference between the pitman arms after 1966?

Logically, they must be the same on the steering box end if the steering boxes are interchangeable through the period 62-72.

From what I have been able to determine It appears the tie rod ends are the same (Moog ES319L and ES319R) 62-70 (Source: Rock Auto).

So what changed between 66 and 67 to require a new pit arm? Is there also a unique center drag link that spans the period 67-72? If that is the case and, provided I could locate this part, would I then be able to use the updated pit arm in my 62 and still have everything line up?

To further muddy the waters, according to Rock Auto, the idler arm changed in 67 so I guess I would need the newer idler arm too?

One more thing to ponder. The Rock Auto buying guide lists the K7074 Pit arm as the correct replacement for a 65 Valiant. Can I presume this is a typo?

I know these are a lot of questions to ponder, and I apologize. I have searched this site high and low and, although the topic of steering linkage has been discussed a number of times, I could not find a discussion of this particular situation.

For reference, I have listed all of the applications for the various pieces according to the Rock Auto site. Any errors or omissions are theirs.

Thanks in advance for your comments on this matter.

-John

have you looked at a 67-72 a body vs 62-66? The width of the car is quite different as is the center link--
something in the steering department had too change.

so off that info the idler arm must have had slight changes to accommodate the steering geometry.

that is my guess no technical back ground-- just a hobbyist that has had both cars.

in fact I have a 66 & 69 parked in my driveway now.

have you seen a k7074 vs a k7020? quite different.

There is a NOS one on Ebay right now. Not cheap but it is there now.

I have not had the opportunity to compare the two parts side by side. All of my cars are pre-67. I have owned `67 up cars in the past, but it was before things like pit arms were needing to be replaced.

My brother, who ran an auto repair shop in the 70's and 80's, tell me that they were a bit hard to find even back in the day, possibly because they rarely wore out.

If the center link is wider, then it would not work in anything pre-67. The listing for the K7074 as a replacement part for a `65 Valiant on Rock Auto must be an error.

I am surprised that this is such a rare part. What the heck are the early Barracuda guys running on their rides?

Thanks for the info.
