Hi JCA
Hey Mr. D,
Quote:
Your Door handles look Very Similar to a standard Jeep DJ or FJ Postal Vehicle.
They do, don't they!
Quote:
Thanks for the link. But $111.00 for a door handle? That's a bit beyond Lorrie's budget.

Did you see the Handle that Reed found? $7.99. That's more like it.

The only problem with each of those Handle is that the 5/16" square piece is 3" long. The one that is on Lorrie's Handle is 1.5" long. BUT, it wouldn't take much to cut the 3" down to 1.5" using the Craftsman RotoTool. Also, the 1.5" center to center mounting holes in the Flange is exactly the same as Lorrie's Handle.

Am thinking that Lorrie is going to get at least two NEW handles since they come in Locking versions.

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to find the Handles on ebay.

Hope this finds YOU doing well.

JC

Hey Reed,
Am thinking that two of these should be ordered. The 5/16" "shank" would have to be cut down from 3" to 1.5", but everything else would remain the same. The distance between the Mounting Holes is 1.5". That's the same as on Lorrie's Handles.

Then... we might be able to find someone who would like to buy Lorrie's GOOD Handle for $111.00! :)

What do you think?

JC

I think if that shaft is the right dimension you should get the $8 handles. I would also recommend getting a pair since they will have a different key than the one driver's side handle you have.

Let us know how it works out!

Hey Reed,
Agreed.

Those kinds of handles have a limited number of key profiles. I'll bet that if the supplier was asked, that he could send a couple of the Handles with the same key profiles.

Will for sure keep you updated.

JCA- Sorry, I wasn't suggesting to buy the ones off of eBay, just using them for an example. I owned a 1965 Kaiser-Jeep DJ5 and it had the same handles. I believe the handles on eBay are (3) side door handles, as the rear door handle had a shorter rod mechanism. Only Right hand drive vehicle I ever owned. You should be able to find the handles for $10-15 in usable shape.-Dan

Hey Mr. D,
No apology necessary. Would you believe that the $111.00 Handles was WAY below some I found that the guy wanted $300.00 to $400.00 for! He said they were "rare".

How did you like right hand drive? As you may or may not know, Lorrie Van Haul, being a former postal delivery vehicle, is a right hand drive. I like it. The only problem is that I can't pass a big rig because I can't see when the other lane is clear. But that isn't any big deal because Lorrie isn't fast enough to need to pass anyone. We just go along between 45 and 55 MPH. Mostly people pass US! She is really good in town because of having a really LOW geared Differential, seeing as to how she was made for a lot of Stop & Go usage.

YES. Reed found some for $7.99 plus shipping. They are after-market and are NEW. Am going to be ordering them tomorrow morning. Am going to call the company's toll free number and see if they can send a pair with matching keys. If they can, GREAT. If they can't, will get them nonetheless.

Anyway, thanks again for the link.

Take care.

I have installed a bunch of these handles when I had my lock shop. Just cut'er down, and redrill the hole in its shaft if needed for your application. If you get one of the cheaper units make sure it has a little shutter that is spring loaded to cover its key hole to keep the weather out of the lock. These things don't last very long in winter ice melt conditions, like any pot metal, so keep them lubed up.

Hey Mr. W,
You had a "lock shop"? When taking the Handle that broke apart, the actual "lock" part of it was broken and before I could do an autopsy on it, it fell apart. All those teenincy springs and the "tumblers" (? if that's a proper term) were scattered all over the place. Have to say that a lock is really spiffy arrangement/mechanism. And from reassembling it (such as was possible) I kind of got the gist of its function. And then after I got used to dealing with all the parts, how it actually "locked" became clear. Have to say that it's a wonder that it worked at all considering how "dry" it was AND the terribly "worn" condition of the keys.
Quote:

Actually, there is no need to drill any holes. The OLD Handle just bolts to the outer surface of the door with the square "shank" (? if that's a proper term) in the square hole in the Latch Mechanism.

Actually, since there is only one source for these handles, will have to take what they have, but I know what you mean about the spring loaded shutter. Hopefully these units will have the little shutter.

Fortunately here in Deep East Texas we don't have "winter ice melt conditions" except in really radical weather conditions. It did snow here twice this Winter but THAT was VERY unusual.

About keeping them lubricated: Isn't there a "graphite" lubricant made specifically for locks? If so, where would one obtain a supply of it? There is already here a "dry" lubricant in a spray can. It supposedly lubricates without being at all "adhesive" which precludes the lubricated surfaces gathering dust and other particulates.

Am going to be calling later this morning to order. As mentioned previously, am going to see if they can send two units that will use a "common" key between them.

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up on these unit.

Take care.

For about the 1st few months I had it, I would try and get in on the left side! Shifting was never comfortable(3-speed non-syncro) with way too low of gears. I sold it to the first person that offered to buy it. Don't imagine I'll ever have another RHD, unless you decide to sell Lorrie! :D

Hey Mr. D,
It IS kind of strange till one gets used to it. When Lorrie came to live with me, I had been without a vehicle for a couple of years, so I wasn't all that used to getting into a vehicle at all. Got Lorrie and adjusted to the Right Hand Drive pretty easily.

Lorrie was my daily driver from 1975 till 1981 when the company for whom I was working GAVE me a 1981 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 complete with everything except T-Tops as a bonus for a video that I made that on its first showing sold $6,000,000.00 worth the Offshore Oil Rig Marine Cranes.

That Camaro was the worst vehicle I have ever owned!

I drove it while I rebuilt Lorrie which was completed in 1985..

In June of 1986, my mother could no longer see well enough to get her driver's license and so my father called and said: "You've always liked this old Ford (Ms. American). If you want it, come get it. I'll sell it to you for a buck!"

I was on the plane on Friday after work.

Flew out to Ontario International. Father picked me up. I left Cherry Valley, California the next morning in Ms. American. Arrived back in Houston Sunday evening. Was back to work on Monday Morning.

I can see how shifting with one's left hand would be strange. Lorrie has an A727 Torqueflite Transmission, and her Gear Selector is on the right side of the Instrument Panel.
Quote:

Awww. Poor little old thing. But maybe she found a good home. Have had a number of people want to buy both Lorrie AND Ms. American, but I tell them that it would be like selling one's grandmother. :)
Quote:

I tell everyone that Lorrie used to work for the Post Office, but then she got out of being a government worker and got a job in show business.

In 1975, I was performing on the rock concert tour circuit. I owned the "AllisonWonderland Concert Lightshow", and Lorrie was my equipment truck.

When I've finally passed on, Lorrie is still going to be in show biz as I have willed her to Jeane Champion of "She's Crafty", a craft services business. Craft services is the business that supplies everything for film crews making movies on location. Jeane did the craft services for "3:10 to Yuma" with Russell Crowe, a couple of the Terminator movies, and is presently doing craft services for the TV Show "Dallas".

Ms. American, on the other hand is going to go to a big time restorer who is headquartered in Seattle, Washington. He specializes in restoring Galaxie "more-doors". He has promised to do a complete restoration of Ms. American. She'll probably end up being a "trailer queen"!

Anyway, take it easy. Hope YOU are doing well.

JC

Hey Mr. H,
I REALLY like it. When turning right, one can see the curb. When turning left, one can see the curb. The only time one can't see is if one is behind a big rig and want to pass. If I'm behind a car, I can see OVER it. But behind a big rig one would have to pull out to the left and that's dangerous because one can't see oncoming traffic. BUT, it isn't all that much of a problem because Lorrie isn't fast enough to need to pass anyone. We cruise along at 45 to 55 MPH. She can do that all day without breaking a sweat!

Your Sunbeam is a REAL right hand drive vehicle made in England.

Lorrie isn't English. She was built in Warren, Michigan and has a right hand steering so that she could be used to deliver mail.

I named her Lorrie because that's what the British call a truck and their trucks have right hand drive.

Anyway, hang in there.

You might also try looking for old Dodge brand motorhomes from the 60s and 70s,
Hey Reed,
I just did a search for "Old Dodge Brand Motorhomes from the 60s and 70s" and came up with this:

https://home.comcast.net/~robmorg/oldmh/oldmh.htm

Take a look at these. Some of them are just exquisite, having a funk that exceeds Lorrie by light years! :)

BTW, the Handle referenced in your link can be gotten from multiple sources. Some with lower prices than from the company your link referenced.

Am up at this hour because I was out and about yesterday and my leg and shoulder pain keeps me from sleeping.

Anyway take a look at the above referenced link and tell me what you think.

Take care.
