Is there more than one type of pre 73 a body 10" brake slindle?
I have an SSBC front disk brakes upgrade kit that I have been attempting to install on my 64 Dart. The kit requires the use of 1965-1972 10" drum brake spindles. I got a pair off of a front k frame in a bone yard. The exact car was undeterminable, but I am fairly sure it was a 63-66 a body. The spindles are not correct. The lower 2 bolt holes are 4-5/16" oc. The kit requires a 3.8" lower bolt spread. I called SSBC and confirmed that the kit and the adapter plate is correct.

Thanks all.

Andy,

Can you post a picture of the spindle? Are you certain the car was even an A-body? If I was in this pickle I would call Dick or Dennis at Firm Feel and ask them what lower ball joints have that bolt spacing.

The '73+ A-body spindles use the same ball joints as a B-body which is why I asked if the K-member and suspension was truly from an A-body. The older B-body spindles used a smaller wheel bearing, but if it's the same bearing as the '65-'72 A body 10" drum then the SSBC rotors should fit. The lower ball joint would then need to be swapped for the B-body/'73+ A-body piece.

Can you mock up the rotor on the spindle?

The pair I got off of a 65 Dart were the '73 and up spindles. Apparently someone updated this car at some point. The drums were gone so the larger wheel bolt pattern type was not apparent. They have the 4-5/16 bolt centers on the the bottom bolts which will not work. The earlier 10" drum spindles, the ones that I need, have a bolt center of 3-13/16. As far as I see, the SSBC kit will only bolt up to the early a body 10" spindle with the lower bolt centers at 3-13/16. I am still looking...
Using the 73 and up spindles, I mocked up the rotor onto the spindle, but the rotor does not slide fully back onto the spindle shaft so the rotor and caliper are not on the same plane. I can only attach the top 2 bolts to the spindle to the kits adapter plate.
Thanks again to all for the input.

All drum brake A bodies are small bolt pattern so having the drums present would not have helped. The good news is the '73+ drum spindle can be sold to someone to put 11.75" rotors and Viper calipers on their car. I did this on my '72 Dart.

I traded them for an A body 8.75 rear.
I got the SSBC kit for relatively cheap, or I probably would have just gone with a 73 and up disc setup. The cheap part is fading though as I keep striking out on the spindles.

Third time's a charm.
Ok, I got the correct spindles. They came off of a 69 Formula S. The lower bolt spread is 3.8" oc and all 4 bolts align with the SSBC adapter plate.
One place sold me the wrong '73 and up spindles, one guy had the 9" drum spindles, and the third guy had the correct ones which I bought up immediately.
Thanks for everyones help.
