Does anyone know how much it would cost and what kind of equiptment you would need to do your own soda blasting?

How big a work piece are you looking to do? What sort of air compressor and filtering do you already have?

I have a friend who has a 87' D150 with a 318 motor...he is wanting to soda blast the frame and all of the body pieces and some of the parts. I told him instead of paying someone to do the blasting he should buy the equipment and do it himself and he will have it to blast other things later

He would need to get an air compressor and the soda blasting setup...can it be done in the $600 to $1000 dollar range?

Don't forget hoses filters etc, those tend to nickel and dime you. Blasting media too. Any compressor with enough oomph will be 220v, like the one linked, so plan on running a new circuit if you don't have a spare outlet already. Eastwood stuff is often overpriced so shop around.

That compressor will barely get you by with a blaster that size. Consider looking for a larger used unit. A true 5hp unit will suit a continuous use situation better. You may be able to find a used Quincy Bellair etc industrial unit for less, just make sure it's single phase.

He wants to soda blast the frame on a 27-year-old pickup? Not gonna happen. Soda isn't aggresive enough to do it. You'll have to sand blast it first, and then it's a moot point with the soda.
I'm not so sure soda would even touch the rust that'll be there, even if you try to blast a hole through the frame.

Yeah, i realize now that the frame will have to be sand blasted and the body pieces and smaller parts can be soda blasted...i'm going to help my friend do the blasting this will be my first attempt at soda or sand blasting. I was told with sand you have to be careful not to warp the metal, i'll have to watch some youtube vid's before doing it

We're looking around for the right compressor and will probably buy the soda and sand blaster seperate. I know you can convert the sand to soda media like the eastwood...we'll have to see how it goes. I'll post some before and after pics
