 Post subject: Front shocks fitment

I have fitted front shoks to my 62 Signet but cannot torque the top shock nut to 25 foot pounds as the shock spindle also turns with the nut.

How can I use my torque wrench to torque accurately as I can not hold the shock spindle to stop it turning? (I can tighten with 2 wrenches, one holding the spindle and the other tightening the nut, but I can't get the 25 foot pound reading).

just use a closed end wrench and a pair of vise grips or pliers to hold the shock stud on the flats.


it's not going o be an official 25 ft/lbs...but should be close/ tight enough for the bushing to be tight.


I think there was a special socket / wrench that allowed the stud to be held while tightening the nut.

Unless you are a muscle bound guy, Popeye, or just have a heavy gelding grip, typically a quick cinch using your hand should be about 15-25 ft/lbs...

Your the first I heard of that wanted to torque an upper shock mount nut. A crescent on the flats and an open ended wrench on the nut... or reach around the wheel well with one arm and grasp the upper part of the shock then use a ratcheting wrench or ratchet + deep well socket on the nut.

It's not super critical. This isn't a precision operation. Enough so the rubber bushings squeeze a bit and hold the shock in place. Grasp the shock when yoru done and give it a healthy jerk. If it doesn't move, your set.

Now for my next problem - how do I remove the pivot pin from the rear shock. I need to do this as I am fitting new shocks and need to use these pivot pins.

pivot pin? are you referring to the trunk mount portion of the rear shocks?---- usually I just wire brush them/pb blaster & hit it with an impact & the pin stays in place. if you removed it from the inside of the trunk-- you might have to double nut it & then remove the shock.

the lower mount is part of the shock plate just remove the rear nut & slide off the shock-- no need to be gentle.. again -- if your pins unscrewed from the plate-- double nut it & clean up the shock portion as described & it will go, Lawrence
