Do 73-76 disc and 10" drum brake cars all use the same spindle?

No.
A factory disc brake spindle has extra bolt holes needed to mount the caliper.
The aftermarket has adapters that can be used with drum brake spindles, so DB calipers can be mounted.

Not only that, but the '72 and older spindle uses a different ball joint and wheel bearings than the '73+ spindle.

Hi Doug,

So I was asking the Wilwood aftermarket disk kit person about this. He said all spindles will work with their kits, i.e., they are the same.

I know the SSBC kits work with factory 10" drum spindles, but I'm wondering if the Wilwood kits do as well...in other words, will any of these kits fit my factory 10" drum spindles?

So, I reread your reply, DD, you're saying the Wilwood kits should work with drum spindles because they come with adapters, right?

Negative. If the caliper mounting uses the ball joint holes it will fit the early or late drum brake spindle, but not both. If the hub uses one set of bearings its early or late 10" drum spindle, but not both. Ask Wilwood about the bearings and lower caliper mount bolt spacing and see which spindle it matches.

Looking at the Wilwood kit it's obviously for disc brake spindles.

I'm sure this has been hashed over on these boards, but...

I'm switching my '67 to the '73-76 LCA/UCA's (larger ball joints) and 10" brake drum spindles. I know the SSBC disc brake conversion kit will fit these spindles.

Does anyone know if there is another choice out there that fits the 10" brake drum spindles?

The SSBC A153 kit will only work with the 65-72 10" drum spindles. It will not work with the 73-76 spindles, the 9" drum spindles or the disk brake spindles. The adapter plate that comes with the kit will only bolt up to the 4 bolts on the 65-72 10" drum spindles. I just went through this and got to try all of the wrong combos before getting the proper 65-72 10" drum spindles.
I am not familiar with other aftermarket kit requirements.

I think it's probably best to get the 73-76 disc spindles. Does anyone know if the aftermarket ones are OK if not made in China?

Swap a ford 8.8 explore rear. W disks ,tracloc, 3.73 and have a bigger choice of tires and wheels

I can attest to the fact that you can use [B-F-J-M-R]-body disc brake spindles on an A-body. If you want to go the junkyard route, it's a hell of a lot easier to find Diplomats and '80s Fifth Avenues than it is to find late A-body cars. If you go that route, you can also grab the caliper hangers and then you don't need any conversion kit at all, as long as the donor car's brake rotors are big enough for you. Just get new rotors and calipers for the donor car from any decent parts house.

it might be moot if you are already in a junkard looking at volare or aspen, but regarding 10" drum spindles:

There are at least 3 different spindles to confuse the subject.

* 65-72 A-body 10"x2.25" drum spindles. these use the smaller ball joints that all A-bodies used until '73. these obviously will not work with the large BJ UCAs.

* 62-72 B-body 10"x2.5" drum spindles. A lot of aftermarket conversion kits use these as a basis because 10" B-bodies are the most popular mopar to fix up. and tons of them came with 10" drums. This will fit an A-body with the 73-76 UCA & BJs.

* 73-75 A-body 10"x2.5" drum spindles. These look like the 62-72 B-body units, but they changed the bearing size to match the new unicast rotors. so they aren't the same as the 62-72 B-units. also wheel cyl. shape changed and other things.

SSBC says "Vehicle must have O.E. 10 in. drum brakes." but all three of the above use different bearings, so they will need a bit more info to qualify it. maybe they have adapters for all three, who knows. those kits are expensive. you can 3 volares for what they are asking.

You can get A-body 1976 drum spindles up to factory build date of 1-1-1976...there are lots of 1975 build date, 1976 model year A-bodies that got these (most are the early build dates in August/Sept of 1975.
