Hi,

Which wire clips on the back on the alternator, green or blue and where does the remaining wire go?

Also does it matter which post on the coil I attach the distributor to? I assume it the post closest to it and both terminals say BAT on it.


Any info would be appreciated.

You have stated elsewhere that this is a 71 Dart, so I am assuming you have a single field alternator.

It should be fairly obvious what wire goes to what terminal. The field wires have the female spade terminals that goes to the male field terminal on the back of the alternator. The battery wire is the big fat wire with the ring terminal on the end that goes to the post on the alternator back.

Field wires on A bodies are usually blue but the blue insulation can fade over time to look green.

I will also assume you have a points igniton system. If so, the distributor wire goes to the negative coil terminal.

Thank you for the reply. I have a blue and green female terminal wire that
go to the male terminal on the alt. I do have points for some lame reason.


Also would you know where the natural safety switch is located??

You have ponits because in 1971 points were standard on all Chrysler vehicles. I say I assumed you had them because switching to electronic ignition is fairly easy and could have been done in the 40+ years since your car was built.

It looks like I was wrong- Chrysler went to the dual-field alternator in 1970, so both the green and blue wires go to the spade terminals on the back of the alternator. It doesn't matter which wire goes to which terminal.

The neutral safety switch is in the body of the trans towards the back of the main body housing on the driver's side. You can check it with a VOM meter to see if it is good. One of the terminals is for the back up lights, and will have continuity when the trans is in reverse. One of them grounds the starter solenoid when the trans is in neutral or park. The other one will have 12+ fed from the connector to it to power the back up lights. Yu can probably figure out which one is which from the diagram Reed linked you to.


Put your VOM in continuity or resistance mode, and check between one of the terminals and ground to see if there is continuity in park and neutral. If there is not, then your neutral safety switch is bad.
