yesterday i made a trip to Philly and i topped the tank off in the old 69 Valiant, on my way home i filled the tank up again and checked my fuel economy i about lost it when i saw what it was, and remember most of this was highway with some city driving i got 25.224 mpg on my average. that leads me to believe my true all out highway mileage is around 27 mpg which would put my city right where its always been at 20. i dont have much done to the engine except its tuned very well and drove it like i had an egg under my foot

my goal is 30mpg im gonna make some belly pans up and put a chin spoiler thing on it and keep on doing what im doing also im gonna put a 318 exhaust pipe on it with a bullet muffler with a 340 tip and tail pipe and yes rick i shall be there

That is great! Keeping a engine in good tune is well worth it.

Today when I filled up I was very pleased to see 24.2 mpg which is local short hops and a little freeway driving. This warm weather really cuts down on warm up time and helps the mileage a lot. It just shows you the importance of manifold heat on these motors. All winter I averaged 22 mpg.

With an exhaust system and gearing like mine I am sure you can reach your goal. Click on the red link to view the 340 stainless exhaust tip.

i have the same gears and i have a holley 1920 with a 59 jet i also have a 4 blade fan still my car is damn near stock i really am hoping for 30 mpg highway

What transmission do you have? Manual 3 speed or?

As you can see below in my signature block, mine is a 904 automatic in a heavy 3300 lb car. Not a light car compared to the earlier models in the 60's and not a very aerodynamic car either! More like a square brick, but the front spoiler helps and dropping the nose two inches with a taller arched springs. The engine bay stays nice and cool with this set up even in the hot days we have been having this year and the two 10" electric fans rarely engage. By creating lots of torque and keeping the rpms down the engine just doesn't work too hard nor does it generate a lot of excess heat. I use a 180 Stant Super stat in the summer. The big 2.5" exhaust system is very efficient, quiet and wicks away a lot of the heat. When I drive I try to keep the vacuum gauge at 15" or more and stay between 2000 and 2600 rpm.

I would like to build my 170 for economy in the '64 Valiant. I think 30+ mpg is achievable. These economy reports are good news

The 170 should be able to be tuned for that, no problem.

Over the years, I achieved a great many very consistent 27 mpg (highway) readings from bone-stock cars. (65 Valiant 3.23 gear auto, 64 Valiant 3.23 gear 3spd).

In contrast, my 225 cars usually provided more like 22-23 mpg highway. That's bone stock.

I still dream seeing what I could do in today's world, 10-20 years later, with EFI and OD...

Also a handful of other toys for variety now and then.

The '76 Dart Lite I had for years got 29 mpg consistently on the midwestern highways at 65-70 mph. The 4 speed 0.83 OD was a key part of that.
