left Indy Friday AM, driving to Crossville TN in the 83 D150,,

running on 65 South,, about an hour out of Indy,, suddenly,, major loss of power, engine running rough... stopped along side of the road, hoped I would find a spark plug wire off, vacuum hose disconnected,, not that lucky.

turned around and headed home, switched vehicles, luggage, including the 170 motor that I was hauling to Crossville for Charlie S from the 83 D150 to the 96 Sonoma,, looked like racing was not going to happen, but wife and I were heading to Crossville anyway. Turns out the weekend racing was rained out, but we did get the 170 delivered. We still had a fun road trip..

Got back today, checked out the 83 D150, did a compresssion check, 1 to 6 were

180, 20, 180, 178, 180, 180,, motor has 4500 miles on it, had been running fine..

pulled the valve cover, found the intake rocker for the #2 cylinder intake had failed.

Cam is ,, 212 / 206 @ .050,, .431 lift,, stock springs,,,

the rockers are NOS parts that I got from Mancini,, the NOS rocker failed at a weld joint... boxes they came in were dated 1990,, so you just never know about parts..

Glad to hear it, and hopefully it does not signify stuck valve or something else. Not likely. I wonder if a lot of those "NOS parts" floating around are leftover junk that the factories wanted to clear out??

If you pulled stuff off a running engine and it looks good, reuse it...

Great to see you in Crossville, even if we didn't get to race!

Lou

Any erratic running before that? As above, a stuck valve and the piston hitting the valve could do that.... although bending the pushrod is the usual result of that scenario. And with 4500 miles on the engine, that seems even more unlikley, assuming the head was thoroughly done.

I would replace the rocker (soundsl like you way on the way to doign that) but while the shaft was off, check the valves for free movement and perhaps consider working a bit of Marvel Mystery oil or the like down the guides.

BTW, what oil and additives are you using? Just looking for any clue that something might be sticking....

Glad you recovered and made it to Crossville; nice area.

The engine had been ran with conventional 10w30,, Mobil
At the most recent change,, maybe 100 miles prior to the problem I put Rotella synthetic blend in,, also 10w30.

I used MMO in the gas through the first 1000 miles break in then at 2000 and 4000 since.

It will be about a week before I can get back to the 83 D150,, if it ends up being anything but a POS rocker arm, I'll post back.
