I thought I had bought a NOS set of 2.76 gears for a 742 case (8.75). The gears just arrived. The ring gear has 47 teeth, the pinion gear has 13 teeth...but they both have 2.76 stamped on them. Clearly there is an error, as the ratio of ring to pinion teeth is 3.62.

Did 2.76's come in different tooth count sets? This seems to be a mismatch from two gear sets?

Anyone know about this?

thanks

Brian

Do they mesh together?

The 2.76 gears are supposed to be 47 teeth ring gear and 17 teeth pinion gear. These ring and pinion are stamped with the correct serial numbers, but the pinion has only 13 teeth...this must be a factory reject or something...or maybe somebody restamped the pinion, it looks like there are other numbers on there as well...

I would guess you have the wrong pinion gear. I don't think they really ever made 3.62 gearsets for the 8-3/4.

If they mesh and are new, the 3.62 would not be a bad ratio. Could it be an old set from a nascar team? They had every ratio you could think of.

It was the correct ring gear, as you all suggested, 47 teeth, but the pinion gear was actually stamped twice, once with the correct serial number for and with"3.23" and another time with the correct serial number for and with "2.76". It clearly was a factory mistake, as the pinion gear has 13 teeth. Factory 3.23 ring and pinion have 42 and 13 teeth, respectively. 2.76 ring and pinion have 47 and 17 teeth, respectively. And no, they don't mesh, not even close...

thanks everyone, it seems I have a rare NOS 13 tooth 3.23 pinion gear for a 742 case stamped with both 3.23 and 2.76 information. Anyone need one? The vendor is sending me another 2.76 NOS set in the box.

I got the new set, they are correct and matched, marked by the machinist back in the day...ugh, what a saga with this rear end work. It'll be worth it in the end. Most of my driving is highway, so the airplane gears are the way to go (maybe some day I'll get that 5 speed with OD and put the 3.55's back in).
