I have the chance to get rear 10" brakes off of a 1973 LBP 7 1/4 . Will these bolt/work on my Valiants 1972 SBP 7 1/4 rear end? I will get new SBP 10" drums but need to know about the backing plate etc. Thanks, nick

No, the big bolt pattern axle housing is narrower to accommodate the wider brakes. You need the whole axle assembly to change from small to big bolt pattern.

Ah, looks like I misunderstood the original question. Yes, if you want 10" drum brakes on a small bolt pattern 7 1/4 they have to come from another small bolt pattern 7 1/4. I'd still try to find a complete axle assembly though.

The late BBP brakes have a completely different pattern on the backing plates. The SBP 7-1/4 brakes are 4 hole mount, the BBP are 5 hole. The BBP will also fit on an 8-3/4 or 8-1/4 though.

The BBP 7-1/4 got different housing ends, bearings, and axles.

Thats not good. I stupidly assumed I could get backing plates from an 80's D50 or B150, bolt to my 7-1/4" rear' and install all new 10" drum brake stuff. (similarly, I was kicking myself for having thrown away my van's rear brakes when I had swapped rears, upgrading brakes in the process.)

I only recall seeing 10" rear drums on A-bodies that had disc brakes. (My 10" drum cars still had 9" rear drums.) They seemed fairly "common" on '73-up LBP 7 1/4 rears, but I can't say that I've ever seen a SBP disc car with 7 1/4 axle ( always 8 3/4 rear with those silly skinny 10" shoes )

I see we've revived a dead thread. I'll pump some more life into it now.

Had a disc brake '72 Duster with 10" rear drums on the 7 1/4" axle. Those drums had large bells. I imagine for improved cooling. My '66 Barracuda had 10" drums front and rear. Also with a 7 1/4" rear axle.

On my 64 dart with a 7 1/4 rear end I seem to have a bent backing plate on the left rear. The shoes are slightly mis aligned with the drum and wearing unevenly. I don't know how the backing plate could get bent. I had been running that wheel with one broken stud. When looking directly from front or rear with the wheel and drum off the backing plate looks bent in at the bottom. There is a little play in the axle and hub. but not much. Am I missing something?

Does anyone have a 9" SBP left rear backing plate around? I am in Washington south of seattle.

I also have a broken lug stud on a front wheel. (tire jockey missed my markings indicting LH thread). On the rear I just ground the broken stud off and center punched and center drilled the lug. It came out pretty easy. However it did not appeared to be swedged on the rear. Will the same approach work on the front drum? Can I use the stack of washer approach to install the front lug?

I have a nice set of SBP rally wheels that I want to keep
