So, I had my 742 chunk with NOS 2.76's put in on Friday. I drove it a couple days, it was great, no weird sounds or anything. The pinion seal is leaking a bit, very slow leak...but....

On my way to work today I started hearing a rotational sound, like something rubbing or scraping against something else.

I took it to my local mechanic (I work 40-50 miles from home); haven't heard back yet, but does anyone have any ideas? Adjuster come loose, axle falling out? It doesn't seem to be worse on turns, in fact it was quieter in turns. I'm scared...

Any takers on what this new sound might be? I hope my new chunk isn't ruined...

Brian

I checked after work, they seem to have installed the axles bass ackwards. The adjuster is on the driver's side, but if I remember my owner's manual correctly, shouldn't that be on the passenger (right) side of the car?

The backing plate on the passenger side is tilted slightly and the axle is rubbing against the strut (which appears to be installed upside down)...

I can't believe it, this guy has done this many times correctly...

I wonder if this has ruined my axle bearings...

So, it turns out the guy couldn't get the axles in all the way so he just switched them around and such...

Are the thrust pins all the same in these chunks? Maybe the thrust pin popped out and got crunched in there. He'll have to pull the chunk and check it out...ugh.

The axles are the right length for sure and they worked with the old chunk just fine. Is there a difference between open and posi as far as axle fitment? I thought these chunks were interchangeable...

Thanks for any advice.

Brian

If you installed a sure grip, and the axles would not go in all the way, the splines in the SG unit, might be out of alignment.

He installed green bearings and it worked, so I can only imagine he had an issue with the bearing races or something. The axles were going in most of the way, so the splines where engaging. Perhaps the thrust pin adjuster fell out or something and he didn't tell me...
