well a few years ago I made one out of some 14 gauge fusible link, a couple alligator clips and a SW ammeter gauge and dipped the back end in plastidip. I'm kind of partial to it because I made it and for what I do with it, it works. I never have checked the market lately, I remember once seeing an amp clamp at an electrical supply house for about $150. I'm sure there are much cheaper versions. Maybe I will stop by Crappy tire one of these days and check theirs out...

Have you ever seen a VAT-40? Old sun battery/charging system tester... has an analog voltmeter and a clampon ammeter with a variable load. Cranked the load up high enough once to make my alternator belt slip.

not sure, the ones I like are the carbon pile load testers. I cant remember the make and model, but I used to have a blue handheld one in my service truck for a few years. That thing was great. I never did get around to buying one.

The snap on guy is selling a palmheld electronic load tester that can load test a battery no matter what state of charge it's in. Expensive though, if I ever get serious I'll probably buy that.

I think the one in the VAT-40 is one huge resistor, not sure. The meter is marked up to 300 A. I got it up to 275a before the belt started screeching.
