Removed the speedo/dash cluster to try and remove the park lock "parking brake sprag" cable from the back of the pushbutton cluster.

What's the easiest way to pry apart that bracket that holds the metal ferrule end of the cable? See below pic.

I tried taking a pair of dikes to this one and was able to pry it apart, but that was way easier because this cable is not buried in the back of the dash like the other and I was able to swing this one around every which way to get the dikes to bite into the prongs holding the ferrule. Thoughts?

You might try putting the metal bracket in a vice and then use a punch to open up the squeze on the cable.

Thanks. But as mentioned, the cable I need to extricate from said bracket is buried in the back of the dash, attached to the p/b assembly. Can't get it out to work it over in a vise.

Granted that my 63 isn't the same as your 60 BUT, my FSM doesn't have any procedure for removing the cables from the p/b assembly. The implication is that you'll have to remove the shifter from the car in order to service the park or shift cables.

Agreed... I have always removed the PB assembly & cables as a unit with the "trick" being the removal of the cables from the transmission.

Removing the crimped stamped metal clamp from the cable end is a challenge... a pair of snap ring "spreader" pliers can be a helpful tool.

Hmm. Hadn't considered doing that - was trying to avoid removing the P/B assembly. Maybe I can't. I will pick up a pair of those channel lock snap retaining ring pliers - I should have a pair of those for work like this.

That said, lets say I proceed with trying to remove the whole assembly and I remove the park lock cable from the trans end. Is removing the shifter cable and adjusting wheel easy enough? I'm going to guide and thread them through the openings in the firewall. Wondering if I can easily pop out the large rubber rectangular-looking plug so the cable can easily slide through, wheel intact...?

As an aside, now would be the perfect time to lube the pushbutton assembly since it looks rather dry and every now and again, I'll depress Reverse and the car won't shift into Reverse, which necessitates me playing with the buttons back and forth until it finally takes. Maybe a cable adjustment with the wheel? Do I just spray the springs, etc with oil? Looking through the FSM right now for details on that. Unit seems to works smoothly but lubing it couldn't hurt right?
