I have the "race" truck up on stands and I am replacing the ball joints. The uppers are easy since they screw out. But the lowers press in. Is there any way to get the lower joint out without the special "press" tool? Why in the world wouldn't they make them both screw in and use the same joint!! But I digress. I do not have the lower control arm off the truck.
If you have any help it is greatly appreciated.

Rick

Once, in a moment of total desperation, I used a sledge, floor jack, and various large sockets as arbors and receivers to successfully change a pressed lower ball joint on a Dodge truck.

As I do not recommend this procedure, I will say that most chain parts stores rent the proper tool these days.

Yea, I just borrowed the "right" tool, so we shall see how it goes!

Thanks, Rick

I done mine w the loaner tool but my uppers were just ribbed and not screw ins. It's an 84 too so not real sure, be nice if they were all screw ins.

Those small ribs may have been the threads. The threads look like ribs. They are not deep at all and are kind of wide.

I did notice on Rock auto that they list a threaded lower joint. I am wondering if they could work on the press in LCA? I didn't want to chance it, so I got the pres in ones.
