New guy here to the forum. Here's my issue: I just bought my Son his first car, a 71' Dart Swinger with a Slant Six and auto tranny. I just got it running but noticed some type of vent or breather right above the fuel pump. It has a piece of rubber tubing on it but is not attached to anything above it and it vents crankcase fumes into the engine compartment. Is this right? If not and anyone knows what it's for and where it's supposed to be routed/attached to, I'm all ears. Thanks in advance!

Can you post a pic? I'm going to guess that the breather hose isn't hooked up to the air cleaner and is dangling off the side of the engine there.

So there is no where else that I can find for this vent/hose to hook to, unless the hoses are already hooked up incorrectly prior to when I bought it. Thanks for looking and helping. Hopefully I uploaded the images correctly. And if not, my apologies, its my first time using Photobucket.

So I read the article on the evap system. I traced the only two hoses I could find thAt go to the fuel tank from the engine compartment. One goesto the fuel pump itself, the other goes to the breather on the valve cover. I'm lost here guys. Is the mystery vent hose supposed to T into the breather line? Or maybe into the PVC line?

I would say that a previous owner partialy removed that system. At this point I would just cap it off. Most of the parts needed to reactivate it are no longer avaiable.

That article contains all the info you need; the vent pipe on the fuel pump gets connected to the bowl vent pipe on the top-front of the carburetor. All it takes is 5/16" fuel line hose and 2 hose clamps—been a few weeks since I checked, but I'm fairly sure those parts are still available.

Taking the time to understand this simple system and put it in correct order will give you a much better result than just shrugging and capping it off.

I understand simplicity of the system as far as operation, but hooking it up correctly is escaping me. Maybe I'll go into deeper detail. The car is equipped with a Holley 1920 1bbl carb. It's an early non-emission model. The only orifices on it are two on the drivers side that connect to the underside of the air cleaner and the choke dash-pot respectively. On the passenger side of the carb there are orfices for the vacuum advance and the PCV valve. That is all of the connections available on this carb and they are all connected as stated. The large, black breather on top of the rear of the valve cover has two nipples; one nipple has a large hose connected to the air cleaner and the other, smaller nipple is connected to a shorter rubber hose that connects to a steel line mounted to the passenger side rear fender well and ultimately that line goes back to the fuel tank. That leaves me with the mystery of where the vent above the fuel pump is supposed to connect. I'm out of connections....UNLESS...the breather in the valve cover is the incorrect part, being that it has two nipples?

It's easy when you have the correct carburetor for the car, or at least one that's fully compatible. It's impossible when you don't.
Then you can't hook up the system and you'll either have to finish hacking it (plug the vent on the fuel pump) or install an appropriate carburetor.
To the bowl vent tube on a carburetor fully compatible with the car.
Re-read that article you were linked to. For some reason, you're not seeing (or skipping past?) the direct answers to your question.

I've read and re- read it word for word. In doing so here is what I have gathered:

The engine has the crank case vent tube above the fuel pump (Slant six cars) AND two nipples on the breather (associated to V8 cars according to the article) so this must be the wrong breather. Additionally, it has the wrong carb also. Please tell me what make and model carb should be on it, and where I might pick up the correct breather. Thanks.
