My son somehow lost the transmission dip stick for his 1964 valiant. I pulled one from a later model small block chrysler with a 904 which from what I heard should fit. It did not, about 2 inches too long. Is the tube possibly shorter on the earlier 904?. Does anyone know what years would work. The stick I pulled from the Chrysler is 18 3/4 from the tip to the notch just below the rubber.

Early 904 tubes had a single bend and a bolt tab at the bottom. ( the short tube)

Later tubes had 2 bends... more of an "S" shape and were longer.
I think the last year for the short tube was 1966.

Thanks. So since if any find an early stick I will need to replace the tube with a longer one.

The shorter dipstick is pretty common so you should be able to fine one in your local area.
(I have a "box full" out here in CA but shipping would be $$)

Thanks again. None of the local yards had any and neither did my friend Charlie in Ocala. I am leery of ordering anything online when it comes to these older models.if I cant locate one in the next couple of days I might have to get one from you and pay whatever it costs. I will let you know. Mark

Both my 66 Cuda and 66 Valiant have the "S" bend tube with the bolt tab at the trans. Don't remember what year trans is in the Valiant. The Barracuda has a 65 trans, with a 64 Valve body, and a 68 or 69 front pump and input. Both have dipsticks that are the same as my 1988 diplomat 318/904.

Charlie,

Mine has a single bend in it. If I cant find a stick ill go back and get the tube. My tube is 13.5 inches when measured from the base to the top in a straight line, not including the bend. In other words the hypotenuse.

Ok, still no stick. So I will mofify this I guess. Does anyone know where the stick bottoms out. In other words how far from actually touching the pan does the stick go.
