I can't answer your exact question, but why are you using a slant to SB 727 adapter? If you really want a 727 trans (which I don't think is necessary) why not use a slant six 727? It will bolt right up (as long as you have the large crank pocket).

I am not. The adapter came mated to the 727 ... I am looking at the a500 ...

I'd be more worried about the tunnel then the starter.

Member Dart 270 did the A-500 swap a few years ago in a '68 Dart 4 door. Play around with the "Search" feature and it may find his thread for you.

And yes, the crossmember area needs massaging.

OK, that is a good reason. And, yes, look for info from Dart270.

It's actually more the exhaust configuration, once you put a low mount starter into any A-body you start taking up precious room for the exhaust to exit properly as that area is where the stock pipe, and where most headers dump out ...It's even tighter in the 63-66 bodies hence the need for the shorty headers in those cars...with an automatic in the 1967-1976 cars you have more wiggle room with a low mount starter, since my duster has the worst case scenario with the 11" clutch, bell, and low mount starter, and the Z-bar...there is no more real estate there and headers of any configuration will not work...so going dual duals were the least restrictive choice there, but still there are only a couple of spaces left past the drivers side K member, so the least restrictive path was going to a Y and a larger single outlet...so now my duster cannot mount a sway bar either because of that need....(but I don't have the problem that the rear dual presents with the high mount starter either...)

Really too bad that mopar didn't have a bellhousing that clocked the starter to the passenger side low mount, to free up room, but there was no pressing need for it, and in a stock configuration the owner could swap a starter faster than any of the V-8 owners could...

once you do an under hood mock up the head scratching really begins and some sacrificial choices become more common on where things need to go and what won't fit...

Huge tunnel surgery required. Cut the upper X member all the way over the top and rebuild above the orginal sheet metal, and then still the trans will hang a little low. The A500 is a very heavy transmission and sucks power. I maybe gained 10% in MPG, but the car was about 0.1-0.2 sec slower in the 1/4 mile when comparing 904 w/2800 stall and 2.94 rear to A500 w/2200 stall and 3.91 rear. Also, it is essentially impossible to get someone to build you a high stall (>2400) lockup converter. I even said "I don't care what it costs" and I still couldn't find someone to do it.

So, in the next 6 months I will pull my A500 after 13 yrs of service and replace with a 200-4R using the Wilcap adapter plate.

Hope this info helps,

Lou
