My '72 Scamp 225 with stock oil pump was leaking at the pump cover. I pulled the cover to replace the o ring and am confused on the correct cover orientation. I see pictures on other posts that do not look like my pump. Mine has 5 bolts, can mount 5 different positions and has two foot print shaped bumps on the cover with matching holes on the back of the cover. I thought the bumps were at the 4 o'clock position but I get no pressure there. My book looks like they are to be at the 6 o'clock position. Can anyone confirm?

Also with the cover off, should the center pump gear attached to the shaft slide out of the pump housing? It looks like it should be locked in with the cam gear on the other end. Mine seemed to slide out about 3/8" and slide back in when I put the cover on.

The bottoms of the kidney-shaped bumps should be at the bottom of the oil pump, that is 6:00.

The outer rotor ring can fall out, but the inner pump rotor should not slide out; sounds like you might have some trouble that warrants removing the whole oil pump and seeing what's what.

Thanks Dan. After posting I did also see the Dutra pump failure link that shows the bumps down. On the sliding center gear, any tolerances?? 3/8", 1/4", 1/8"? Or should it be zero? I will pull the cover tonight and make sure what I saw but if it is OK to move slightly I would like to know what that amount is. Thanks again.

It was not the four point impeller moving, just the 5 notch gear. All is good. Thanks for the help.

Yes, all is good again. two weeks ago after changing the oil and filter I noticed the oil pump leak. Then all the cover/ bump issues came up which you helped correct. Then I saw the flared fitting on the fuel pump to the rigid tube to the carb was leaking. I must have wiggled the tube too much changing the fuel filter and cracked the fitting So the new fuel pump arrived and was installed - no problems there. Now that I could start it the oil pressure light went off but there was no oil visible at the valves with the valve cover removed. I ordered a new oil pump just in case which I will not accept when it arrives because I also got another WIX filter to replace the week old one out and wa-la. Oil pressure and wet rockers. How often do these filters fail when new?

Well, if the light went out with the first filter, you had to have at least around 10 psi oil pressure (and likely much more) through the filter. It takes a while for oil to reach the rockers, easily 30 to 60 seconds. How long did you watch for rocker oil with the 1st filter?

Cut the 1st filter open and see what you can find.

Have you checked and made sure that the rocker arm shaft is oriented correctly? These can be installed 180 degree out of rotation and the oiling holes for the rockers will be misaligned and oil flow will be seriously impinged. If you are not seeing oil flowing out the tips of the rockers arms fairly soon after the engine is started, I strongly recommend that you pul the rocker arm shaft and endure that the oiling holes in the shaft are pointed down and towards the manifolds on the engine, not up and towards the passenger fender.

Reed, I have oil flowing now. The motor was not taken apart so I am confident that the rocker arm is oriented correctly. The issue all started with a running motor that had the o ring on the oil pump fail. It was crusty and flaked out. A new o ring went on and then I had no oil pressure. All is good again. Thanks for everyone's help. Without this forum I would be using public transportation frequently.
