Well I know this is going to bring many issues with many people, but I want to put a regular radio from today in my 1971 duster. It has the AM radio that is shot. Can I just cut out the hole big enough to with the width and length? Is there enough depth in the dash to hold a radio from today? I know I will face more issues when I tear apart the dash to get to that speaker in the dash any advice on that too?

Yep, just cut the hole and it will fit, pretty much. My suggestion is cut it a little small, and make it bigger little by little till it fits.

I never even got around to pulling the original speaker, just wired up 2 6x9s in the package tray holes. Can't tell ya how hard/easy it is.

package tray holes? I thought about buying some separate enclosures to set in the back windshield for some 6 x 9's.

If you pull your rear seat and pull the trim and particle board package tray, your Duster should have 2 holes in the sheet metal for speakers....if you have a rear defroster option it will take up the passenger side hole....

If you don't want to cut up your dash too bad, there used to be a few options from Pioneer and Panasonic tape decks with leads for CD player/amp/MP3 add ins, with a little massaging it fits the stock radio holes in the 70's cars. Another item to keep an eye on is your heater tubes, if they leak while in heating mode your radio/player can go out due to overheating....

you could convert your am radio into one with am/fm, auxiliary input, bluetooth. I just had mine done by a member here.

http://www.ricksradioconversions.com/

He has videos of my radio on his Facebook page.

My conversion was $500 which isn't cheap but it is a great product and you get to keep your stock dash.

Maybe get a marine radio with bluetooth. There are threads on the H.A.M.B on this subject.

Don't cut the dash. Looks awful and hurts resale value. Just mount it in the glove box or under the seat and hook it up to an ipod. You also wont have to worry about idiots breaking in to try and steal it.
