I have a 225 slant six, all stock and original in a 74 dart sport and I was wondering how do I find out if it uses a hydrolic cam or a mechanical cam?

Hydraulic didn't start until later, 78ish. So if your 74 setup is untouched then its mechanical. Another easy way to tell - open up the oil fill cap on the valve cover. Look at the rocker arm end opposite the valve. If there's an adjustment screw there it's mechanical, if there isn't its hydraulic.

Hydraulic started in '81. Hydraulic heads have a dogleg in the valve cover by the alternator.

There was a production test run of hydraulic slant-6s in '78. Then the full-scale switchover happened for '81.

if you have a mid 70's slant cam,, you have one of these

The best production cam available for the slant six engines was used in the 1971-1977 engines. This cam (PN 3512639) has a 244 degree duration, 26 degree overlap and a lift of .406" on the intake and .414" on the exhaust. The valve lash of this cam should be .010" on the intake and .020" on the exhaust. Both of these settings are hot.
you can certainly get a bigger cam,,not a bad small cam the way it is,, some folks like em for turbo use.
