What year slant 6 used the old style point type dist. ? My 225 has electronic ignition and need to buy all the parts. Would it be cheaper to go to a point type distrib and coil ? My electronic dist is bad too. thanks

You could say 1960-1972...there are many variations over the years and a couple distinct types of points distributors...it's a crap shoot either way if you buy a reman from the parts store...the stock points cores are very conservative and need some recurving to get the best performance and mileage out of them...the 1972 model will have the moveable spring posts like the EI cores. The 1963-1965 years seem to have the best advance slot to use (11.5) and the last years are not so much (13), unless you are going to weld the slot up a bit for less mech advance to allow more initial.

Search "HEI Conversion" here on the forum. Lots of good information! and might be a better solution for you.

Welcome aboard Steve.

When you say all parts, what needs replacing? There is not much to go wrong with electronic distributor; worn bushings, broken reluctor, and shorted out pick-up or poorly adjusted pick-up.

Distributor's timing governor can be cleaned and re lubed if sticking and springs replaced if broken. The other components would be orange spark controller not working.

Generally electronic ignition is mostly trouble and maintenance free, and much preferred over points. As Ron Popeal said a million times last Christmas hawking a counter top rotisserie; "set it and forget it".

Is there anything that they didn't put a Slant 6 in? :D

You should be able to get everything you need here in the Classifieds or on eBay!

Steve; Do you still have the remains of the parts you're looking for, that you can post pics of?

Some of us may have a pan that will work for you, the valve coverand timing cover should be any pre-80 cover, but there may be some small differences in the timing cover. (Timing tab location.)
If there's any numbers on the distributor, that may get you exactly what came in the engine, but even a used one can be tuned for what you need.
A chipper seems that it would have a rather narrow rpm operating range, so it really should run fine with about any distributor.

Welcome to the board!

Roger

Then somebody made a bad decision and installed a points ignition system. All Chrysler vehicles after 1973 had electronic ignition from the factory.

Yeah if thats the case it doesn't suprise me. The idiots I bought the car from did a lot of dumb things like use a motorcycle battery instead of a car battery. They wired up LED underglow lights and one of the goofy ass gokart sized steering wheels LOL and many other stupid things, I've spent most of my money on my car just reversing their poor quality worksmanship lol
