when the 904 went from the small torque converter input to the large,
( '68 for the change) did the tranny out put shaft.., splines where the drive shaft yoke connects,, also change diameter or spline count or spacing?

thanks

I don't think so. Pretty sure I used the same driveshaft in the '66 when I had the small pilot 170 and trans in it.

trying to decide if I want to go ahead a pull the small register tranny that is in the car,,this is a tranny that I know almost nothing about, other than it seems to shift OK, does not leak,, and replace it with a large register 904 that I picked up,, that I know absolutely nothing about,,

66 up all have the same spline count on the output shaft. However there is a change in the speedometer hook up around 67 or 68. Also the neutral safety switch has the correct terminals (you can't just change the switch).

John, just get a spacer ring from Charlie and call it a day.

I know, too simple. :D

The 66-67 use the cable that threads on to the speedo, in 1968 they changed to the more common nylon cup that clips on the speedo (and as always, after 15-20 years the cup and "clip" get petrified and tend to break when removed).

I was referring to the speedo connection at the trans. The early trans had the small "plug" with the gear attached, pushed into the trans, and was retained similar to a distributer "fork". The later trans, had a large hole, that recieved the adapter which held the gear, then the speedo cable screwed onto that adapter. The adapter had to be "clocked" to the proper position for the gear used.

That lasted through '65.

That started in '66.

Thanks Dan. I couldn't remember the change over years.
