So we're rebuilding the "race transmission" after running it out of fluid at Sebring. We bought a rebuild kit and an ATSG manual, and everything was going fine. The clutch packs are all hilariously worn out, as you'd probably expect. Unfortunately, when we disassembled the planetary sets, we discovered a rather catastrophic failure of some of the hard components.

The below image shows the thrust washer on the front planetary gear assembly. It's held in with the little locking ring I'm holding. You can see that the aluminum body of the planetary housing is beat up, especially in the second picture with the thrust washer removed.

The next two pictures show the "Front Annulus Gear Support," where the thrust washer carved itself a nice cozy space to live. With thrust washer in place:

And without:

You can also see how the axial face of the outer rim is also worn from where it was riding on... something.

So I guess I have two questions. First, what caused this? Second, where can I find replacement parts? Google has not been helpful, but I figure some of y'all might have a crate of old torqueflite parts in the back of the garage. It being a 1964 transmission might make this a little tricky.

I definitely need a replacement Front Annulus Gear Support. The part number on this one is 2464902. The other number cast into it is L18. I might be able to reuse this front planetary set, but it should probably be replaced as well. Its part number is 2408021. This is the 3-pinion planetary, not the 4-pinion used in the later wide-ratio gearset. This is a 1964 cable-driven A904. Closest I've been able to find is on Torqueflite Patty's eBay page, but it's a 4-pinion planetary from a 68+ trans.

I have a couple of cable shift 904 cores. Problem is, I have a bunch of stuff I need to get done, if I am going to make Pigeon Forge. I won't have time to dig one out and remove parts, for a couple of weeks.

PS: If I remember correctly, you can't use the 1968 up planetary in the early trans. The spline count, where it goes on the output shaft is different. I found this out, many years ago, when I tried to install the wide ratio gears in a cable shifted trans.
