I will call Mike up and get a little more clarity here. I do remember him saying they were advertised in one of the recent Mopar magazines.

If cost is an issue, then the 833 OD wins hands down. There are options out there, that will set you back 4-$5000 or more, but they are only for a few. If you put in a 3.91 or 4.10 gear and the factory OD, it works just fine even in a truck. Yeah it's gear spacing may be a little wide, but it can still be had a swap meet for less than 10% of some of they other options. And you can still cruise down the interstate at 65MPH.

PS. That 3.09 1st gear comes in handy in a truck when taking off with a load or pulling a trailer.

My CTS has a Tremec 6-speed, I like that tranny but the clutch is perhaps not enough, it seems to get soft too quickly. When I bought the car it had only 10k miles on it, and by 14k the shifting/grabbing was really soft, starting to slip. Still under warranty, though a wear item, the dealership obviously recognized this was an issue 'cause they replaced the clutch and pressure plate no charge. It shifted really solid for about 20k miles but now is soft again. It is the DI 3.6L v6, 307 hp. First gear will pull tree stumps, you can let out the clutch at idle and not stall the engine. Runs about 2500 rpm at 80 mph in 6th gear. It is a smooth unit and has short throws, it would be nice to have in my Dart...is this the same Tremec unit you speak of?

Here's a trick from the 4wd Toyota site I'm on:

Toyota's use a stepped flywheel. When you machine the flywheel you increase the step slightly to there's more pressure on the disc.

I don't know if the flywheels in use have steps or not.

But I suppose the step could be changed or added to the flywheel.

Here is an add for the Tremec 5-speed for Darts: http://www.hurst-drivelines.com/?page_id=2341

I called them, it is $4k and you still need to get the bellhousing, pedal assembly, shift fork etc.

It is an exciting prospect if you have $5k to spend. I'll put this on my "later in life" bucket list but in the meantime, has anyone done this? Also, what bell housing, specifically, would anyone recommend to work with this? I'm not familiar with the choices for a slant six. Also shift fork if there are differences. I've driven four speeds but never worked on a tranny of any kind other than to change the filter or replace the seal on a dipstick tube or change the mount. I could collect these pieces now, regardless of the final tranny choice.

Also, can someone look at the gear ratios for this tranny (just click on the "TKO transmission" picture in the above page) and let me know if this is better or similar to the 833? Specifically, I have a more aggressive street build coming online, are these gear ratios tighter/appropriate for such a build or better (less rpm drop expected) than say the 833 OD unit? If they aren't then I'd likely just go with the 833OD unit.

Thanks all you salad stirrers out there (D. Idiot is one, he said so).

Brian

You need to search 5 speed swap.

This was all done 10 years ago.

There was even a group buy.

The 5 speed part is easy....the clutch part is not.

I've read a bunch of the old posts, much more reading to do. Did anyone ever put this all together in a final compendium of sorts? Seems like there were many variations on the T-5 swap theme.

And here is one for cheaper :P
http://americanpowertrain.com/i-1207117 ... d-kit.html

I have seen the 5 and 6 speed TKO kits in my classic industrys catalog but for some reason it does not come up on there web sight. And I thought you could use any transmission (727,904,833) if you had the bell housing that had all the bolt holes for them? But I dont know... I used this as a guide for my tranny swap.
