Yep, I have done some pretty extensive searching on this, but pardon me anyway. The clarification I need is this: for a recurve (I have BigSlantFan's kit) must I braze the slots to .38 length? One thread noted that you don't *have* to do this if you're not racing:

If so, no problem, but can I use JB Weld instead of brazing? I have no idea of how to braze or how I would go about this. A thread from 2004 states that "hey, might be worth a shot", but the trail goes cold after that.[/url]

I wrapped some copper wire on the outside of the slot to shorten the slot.

Then soldered it so it wouldn't move.

Did a similar thing when in a rush once. But I used a pair of narrow strips of .032" aluminum sheet, wrapped horseshoe style through the outer edges of the slots. Still in and working fine, never did get around to re-doing it right.

"The most permanent solution's an effective temporary one.", and all that.

The epoxy is not going to take the hammering if the springs let the pegs hit the end of the slots, it will work for a little while then you will start to get more timing as the JB degrades...wire and "shims" will work on a street driver with lower regular rpm cruising you won't typically run the advance all the way to the end of the slot, if you do repeated 4-6000 rpm runs with max timing the pegs will hammer the softer material over time... I tend to weld mine with a mig welder and file or die grind the slot to the finished length.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Very much appreciated by someone that just doesn't have access to a full Mig welding setup. Nor the know how to mess with that stuff!

I looked at the picture in the sticky, BTW, and I'm wondering if I'm supposed to braze ONE or BOTH of the slots. To me it looks as if it's just one slot, but of course I'd like to be 100%.

Thanks!

BOTH of the slots.
You could do one slot and the equal reaction will limit the other peg with the governor...but it's better to do both and be sure...

do an internet search for: welding shops, handy man welding...

I found a local guy,,advertizes as 'johnny weld' less than 5 miles from my house,, reasonable pricing, quick turn around..

stick a machine screw in there and locktite the nut to it, that way you can adjust it if it has the room. if your trying to limit the OEM travel by a few hundredths this may be too much.
