Ok, so I've been battling these things for about two weeks now in my spare time (which I have very little of). I started off with using bushings in my old mounts. After a few days of cussing with those, I ordered some complete mounts from Autozone, which were the wrong thing. Then ordered some from RockAuto, which do look identical to my old ones. The bolt holes match up as far as I can tell. I can get the mounts bolted to the block but then can't get them in the cradle or vice versa. I have tried to do pass. side first then the driver side and vice versa. I have 2 floor jacks, 4 jack stands and an engine hoist to play with so I should be able to figure it out. Maybe I'm just not holdin' my mouth right?

Should I try to just lift the whole motor up, bolt both of them on the block and go from there? Where is the best place to lift these engines? The outer head bolts? I have replaced quite a few V8 mounts and a few L4 mounts in my day but never had this much trouble. This is the first /6 car I have owned.

Lifting - there are 2 bolt holes on the driver side of the valve cover, just by the manifold flanges.

What are you working on? I have no experience with the spool type mounts, but the earlier biscuit type mounts are directional. You may be able to put them in upside down but then the bolts won't align. Post a few pics.

"Nice car you have there", they said. "Be an awful shame if anything were to happen to it."

So, I'm afraid you're going to have to tell us exactly what year and model vehicle you're working on.

Redneck garage method....

make sure your car is secure with wheel chocks...

Grab the air wrench and put a 3/4" deep socket on it....remove the nuts on the spool mount bolts...may need extension on the socket for the passenger side... (a breaker bar and socket may need to be used to get them started...)
Put jack under the oil pan, put 2x4 a little wider than oil pan on jack...jack up so the 2x4 is now put a little tension on oil pan.... use air wrench to pull the bolts holding the mounts to the block...
Jack it up a bit to relieve tension on bolts if difficult to remove...add 2x4 to passenger side fender as "buffer".... remove bolts from block all the way, tension should be off spool mount through bolts.... use fingers to move them out an inch and remove mounts....

Install new mounts to block, install through bolts but leave 1" of slack between the bolt head and the motor mount bushing...let the jack down...use rubber mallet to drive the bolt heads tight to the mount cradles....install nuts with air wrench....hand torque tight if you have a harbor freight air wrench....
