Getting my parts together for my HEI conversion. Have the following:

-Electronic Distributor from Old Car Parts Northwest
-Standard FD478 Coil and Pig Tail
-Standard LX301 Control Module
-Relay
-Junk Yard Bracket from GM Truck
-Napa 701050 Coil to Distributor Wire

I still need to get spark plugs and wires. My questions are:

1. My head is a 1978 range (no drool tubes). What is the best spark plug?

2. Which Magnecor Wire Set Should I order? Does it matter relative to the head?

3. Does the Magnecor Wire Set include the coil to distributor wire? If so how do I tell them so they get it right like the napa?

With all the different parts going together it can be tough to get the right parts.

Thanks for your help.

Craig Allen

1.) Try NGK UR-5 for the peanut style plug at mid range. After running it for awhile see if you need to change the heat range to UR-4 or UR-6. This is an extended plug best run at .040 to .045 gap with the HEI system

2.) Call 248-471-9505 and give Magnecor the part number 65318 to fit a Mopar slant six and say "Made to custom specifications" . You will find the person with the English accent to be very knowledgeable ....so much so he will probably ask if it's drool tube or peanut style without prompting since this part number is used for both styles.

Indicate peanut style (not drool tube).

3) Tell him you want the included coil wire to have a special connection at the coil because you are using your type coil and want a female elbow connection to fit your coil. You need to determine ahead of time how long you want this wire which is based on the location where you place the coil. My coil wire is 12 inches long because I have located the coil very close to the cap.

I have also requested that all of the spark plug wires at the distributor cap connection to not have elbows as it's a bit tight down there with other things going on and I want the wires to come straight up from the cap.

You should be getting the feeling by now that Magnecor does custom wires to your requirements as a norm and since they have done several HEI slant sets for me and I'm assuming a number of others.....they already know what you want.

Send me a PM if you want pictures of the install, the coil wire, or whatever.

UR-5 is the "stock" replacement plug for that year vehicle (1975-up) and is the best place to start....They are standard electrode plugs not extended like the ZFR-5N's for the drool tube heads....gap to .040, there is nothing to gain on the .05 wider gap with a BL plug, if your coil and ignition system is up to par, and your timing curve is optimum.
