New to the slant six society, I thought I'd throw my build out and leave it open for comments and suggestions. Charrlie_S has already given me heeps of information and suggestions on my build, and I'd like to thank him again for that and directing me to this website.

My first go around with the slant six was on a stock engine in my 65 Dart GT.. Threw a Clifford 4 barrel intake with an edelbrock 500 and dual exhaust up to a .64 A/R cheapo Chinese turbo. Got about 18 psi out of it! Never dyno'd it, never ran it. Just dusted a couple small block Chevy camaros by our shop. Eventually the engine started smoking slightly.. Then REALLY smoking. Decided to park it and swap to a 318, then changed my mind back to the /6 simply for badassness. Pulled my engine apart, discovered it to be a factory replacement 1970 cast motor with the early steel crank with the smaller flange for my 4 speed. Found the head gasket blown in 3 places (between 3 and 4 and between 4 and the push rod tube). Thought that was the source of oil. I was wrong. I didn't find one broken piston, but ALL SIX were cracked with all the skirts broken off (wondered what that rattling was).

This time I'm taking no shortcuts. Have some custom dished Pistons coming in for more than my requirements. Will be purchasing Molnar's H-beam rods. 1970 steel crank. For the head, I'll be running a 1970 drool tube with extensive porting, chamber polishing, hardened seats, decked surface, stainless valves, and stiff springs. If anyone knows where I could find a set of roller rockers or get a set made, that would be lovely. The block is getting machines .060 over and decked and o-ringed. I'll run a fairly thick copper gasket. FAST XFI port fuel injection and ignition with custom intake. Turbonetics turbocharger (don't know size yet). Waste gate with electronic control. Blow off valve. I'll run pump gas on the street, and a separate tank for race fuel and a split solenoid to the fuel pump. Hoping for high 500 low 600 horsepower range. It'll be a low RPM torquer.

I'll keep my 4-speed and just rebuild it. Small block flywheel and bellhousing. Dual friction 11" clutch. I've got a strange Dana 60 on the way for the back end. Any suggestions please don't hesitate!

I'm not sure if that's the exact brand, but that was a draw through. My dad and I found it in a pile of his stuff at his shop and decided to throw it together on the /6.

I'll be running port fuel injection next time. Cylinders 1 and 6 were running way too lean due to poor intake design and fuel distribution. It was okay for the boost I was running, but it won't work with what I want to achieve

how many psi were you running? what did you do with your timing? were you running an wideband o2 sensor?

it was pushig 18 psi. We just retarded the timing as much as possible. Just the stock distributor.
No 02 sensor. It was just carbureted

That 02 sensor will save you a lot of time figuring out the lean/rich issues. I started my setup with one and am glad I did. Carbureted 2bbl Turbo.

should still run a wideband. its just nice to know at a glance what the mix is doing, fuel injected or not. you are also going to need to do something with your timing. slants like a max of 18* under boost. that was probably your issue from the start.

Yeah I'm running full on electronic control all around with programable timing and fuel. Probably run exhaust temp guage and manual methanol injection to keep the temp down just in case. Definitely run a wide band O2. I'm going with FAST injection's XFI. Completely customizable

So, I'm totally naïve when it comes to boosting with turbo. What is typical HP for these builds? You mentioned wanting 500-600 hp, is that typical with boost or "special case" regime?

Well with turbos the horsepower is gained through cold boost. You can have 20 psi, but only get 100 horsepower because the turbo is pushing hot air.

It all depends. For a 6 cylinder that's pretty good horsepower. I've seen supra 2JZ straight 6 engines with 1500+ horsepower. 600 horsepower shouldn't be too hard to achieve with a slant. It might not be super special, but it is to me. I'd like to achieve 800 horsepower eventually.

:lol: yeah, YouTube is full of '1000+hp' Supras. I'm sure none of which were even exaggerated numbers.

What it comes down to, is you are gonna need a lot of 2 things: airflow and cubic dollars.
The slant has neither the flow of the 'yota motor, nor the aftermarket support. (Of course, you could buy the bolt-on 2JayZ OHC conversion from Sandy... :twisted: :roll: )

Which is why my goal isn't near 1000 plus haha. They're not exaggerated. Short stroke, high RPM motors that can put out high top end horsepower with 50+ pounds of boost and nitrous. Car show dyno'd prove so. The slant has more torque, so I'm hoping 600 horsepower will feel like more.

Well, porting will help. Big valves. Lack of airflow is where boost comes in. Propper forced induction will account for the poor naturally aspirated airflow. I'll have over $7,000 in my motor probably
