I like both the grease and the hylomar ideas. Grease permeates the paper and makes an effective water barrier, hylomar (and grease) lets you take it back apart without destroying the gaskets.

When i rebuilt my motor 2 years ago I used a Felpro gasket that had an adhesive on one side. You pulled off a cover like you would be pealing a sticker. Never had a leak yet. I attached it to the water pump first and then bolted it up to the block.

Ah! So I was wrong, some do actually come with adhesive. Good to know.

Also my thermostat gasket is the same way. Its a Felpro as well.

here's what I used
I also put some on a cheap battery cable that had come loose.it stays stickie for ever, it's used on gas pump connectors.
