I have just been having problems with my truck starting for the first time daily or whenever you get out to start it and its sat for a day or two. I rarely ever let that happen but it has a few times. I normally drive it daily or every other day and once you have started the truck and it has run for a minute it runs fine, no missing or problems idling...it's just that getting the thing started has become a pain in the a$$ and I have installed an oil gauge and a voltmeter to check into whether or not I have low oil psi or if my voltage is dipping too low but everything is working fine. I recently had to do a GM 1 wire alternator conversion on it after replacing the whole original charging system and it not work correctly. It would only hold the system at about 11.5 volts and if you turned the lights on it would gradually overpower it until it was in candle mode and you're driving blind with a truck that won't start if it dies.....fun stuff.

So the GM alternator works great. I know, blasphemy....but it does work now. I'd just like to know what could I try first, like a hotter ignition coil? I'm running NGK plugs right now and it starts easier than when using Champions....I had to use ether when it was cold cause the Champions were just wimpy. I have new points and condenser on the truck as well as a new battery. The truck works fine once it starts, it's just a pain to start. I also found this website: https://www.jimsautoparts.com/mopar_per ... nition.htm Is the prices on that site decent prices for an electronic ignition conversion, and if so, would that help moreso than just throwing a hotter coil on there? Keep in mind also my truck had no wiring harness left when I got it besides just a few bsic wires like ignition, alternator, voltage reg, etc....and it has a 71 dart distributor on it... I know that's a lot of crazy, but it's what I got, hahaha

Why not do HEI conversion? http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15779
I did it on my 86 and thing starts so much better then it ever did.
You will need a electronic distributor.

Sorry, but without knowing more about what has been done to your truck it will be difficult to help you.

You say the engine is difficult to start. I think your post indicates that you are running a points style ignition and some cobbled together GM alternator charging system. It sounds like someone ripped everything out in an attempt to remove the lean-burn ignition system.

Here are my questions and suggestions:

(1) What carburetor are you currently using? Was it a lean-burn carburetor?
(2) Verify the choke and fast idle settings on your carburetor.
(3) Have you verified the base timing?
(4) Have you verified that the vibration damper hasn't slipped?
(5) Have you checked the condition and gap of the points?
(6) Have you checked the condenser?
(7) Did you get rid of the ballast resistor? If the engine was a lean burn ignition, did you keep the stock lean burn coil or put in something else?
