I just obtained the factory parts to convert my manual tailgate window over to the optional key-operated electric lift. It came with dash switch and bezel - can anyone who knows, or has seen a wagon originally equipped with an electric tailgate window tell me WHERE the switch is supposed to be located on the dashboard? Or is it not supposed to be mounted on the dashboard, but elsewhere? on the front?

I ended up answering my own question. Found some old photos and a review of the Valiant suburbans that show the rear window control immediately to the left of the ignition switch on the dash. Good stuff.

It didn't happen without pictures! Please post pictures of your final install.

Excellent, comprehensive, and brutally honest review on The Valiant Station Wagon from the British car magazine The Motor, March 30th, 1960. P2 shows the dashboard control layout with the power tailgate window control next to the ignition switch, and a couple mentions about it being on the "facia board" aka dashboard. P3 shows a picture of the dash from the passengers side and zooming in, you can see the knob on the dash.

My dashplate is blank from the front in that spot but I didn't closely examine the rear of the plate when I had it off recently, so we'll see when I yank it off again. Haven't installed my switch yet, but will post pictures when done!

I have a sneaking suspicion the cars with electric tailgate glass had a different instrument cluster faceplate. Meant to check when I was last near my '60-'63 A-body FPCs; I'll be able to look again in about a week.

I would indeed be curious to learn this! At the minimum, there would need to be bracketry next to the ignition switch (behind the facia plate) to hold the power tailgate dash switch in place.

Click on the images and it will open in a new page. There you can click on it again and make it bigger. You should be able to click on it from there.
