 Post subject: Engine Swap?

My engine started having problems...I'm going to look at one tomorrow i'm not sure if its a 80s era hydraulic lifter version or not until I look at it. If its an older 60s, 70s era slant can I still match it up with the 4 speed A833 manual transmission? I believe the older slants used a 3 speed trans...

You can they bolt up the same. I have a 79 d-100 that has had the 3 on the tree and both 4 speeds in it. The 3 speed was the original one. The only thing is to make sure the bell housing you have had all the bolt holes or you may have to drill and tap them. I had a cast iron one that I swaped for an 80s one because of this. But mainly I swaped it because I wanted my starter higher up on the bell housing.

So there's no difference in the number of spline teeth? The motor in the truck now is an 80s version with hydraulic lifters...so it has I believe an aluminum bell housing with the a833. I have a 60s era 3 speed manual transmission and bell housing too

For the late truck you can bolt up any 1968-1987 slant six and be in good shape...If you got an early slant with the smaller crank pocket, you can still bolt it up if you either a) swap the crank out for a similar unit from 1968-1976...or b) you get an early flywheel (may not work 100% if you have an NP-435 with the late flywheel currently in the truck and use the early NP style flywheel)...or c) you have an annular spacer machined to keep the late flywheel centered on the early crank register...

other than that you can bolt your A-833/OD up to any of them and go...all 1975-1987 A-833OD bells also have the bolt patterns for the 3 speed as well...(as long as you use the 1975+ 5.125" bearing retainer...)

The engine came out of a 65' barracuda he said it was bolted to a 4 speed transmission. He thinks it may be a newer 80s style slant 6 though. I figure I can tell that by looking at the spark plug holes. But how can I identify if its pre1968? Since that may cause a bolt on problem

The motor is suppose to run great and be ready to roll...he's replacing the slant with a Hemi...by the way what other newer style fuel injected motors would fit in the 84 D150 without too much fabrication?

if you found a donor truck, the 5.2 or 5.9 would be a bolt in just about, they made them with the V6 as well

If I remember right the d-100 style was made up to 1990. By this time they had FI 5.2 5.8 and the V6. All had the option of a 4 and 5 speed manual trans.

If the engine is already out, you can measure the back of the crank. I don't know the register diameter where the flywheel/flex plate bolts on, but the pocket diameter (where a torque converter nose would go if it were an auto) is just about 1.6" for the pre-68 slants if I remember right. The 68+ slants had a pocket more like 1.8". You can find the exact numbers elsewhere on the forum, but that should be close enough to tell them apart.

The Dodge truck K-frame goes up to 1993 as I remember right....the only thing to remember though is there are some motor mount changes and other functional things the magnum engines have... but they can be shoveled right in place...

Mopars common numbers are: 10 spline for the early-mid-60's Np435...1"x23 spline on all the other 3 and 4 speeds, and late Np-435's, except for the late-60's-1970-ish hemi/440 six pack 4 speeds which were 18 spline...

Thanks for all of the responses it's been a while since I last posted...the motor was a 60s era and possibly the original 65 cuda. I decided to give myself a little more time to decide on how to invest in a motor. He was wanting 250 for it and 100 delivery fee

I saw a lot of rust residue from the water pump and thermostat housing the motor may have run alright and been more of a temp solution but I will probably work out something for more of a long term solution that will be stable...may try and due some rebuilding work on mine
