I recently tried to decode my engine block to see exactly what I have. In the normal spot behind the alternator, there was no casting number. I removed the bracket and cleaned the block and nothing's there.

There is a number in the same spot at the back of the block near the bell housing and I read somewhere that's where it is on later blocks. The number is 6f 112007 but I've been looking online and can't find anything that matches. On the other side of the block (freeze plug side), it has 030-12 and a plate that says 2535.

Raised block casting number is on driver's side of engine. Numbers stamped into ledge, or top of machined surface of block above #1 would give information such as displacement and barring size. If engine has been rebuilt those stampings have likely been machined off after trueing top of block.

It sound like a later "5 freeze plug" cast crank 225.

Ya, it's a 5 freeze plug block without the spark plug tubes.

Later stile block, and peanut head put into service around 1975. Pull valve cover to view head casting number.

Block and head may or may not be built the same year. Example my block is a 1968, with a 1976 head.
