The speedo gear housing has the "tower" for the speedo cable slightly offset. This is because different rear axle gear ratios used different speedometer gear drives. You will note that there are numbers stamped on the outer edge of the speedo gear housing. What you need to do is remove the gear, count the number of teeth, the reinstall the gear and rotate the gear housing until the numbers that correspond to the number of teeth on the speedo get are opposite the bolt for the gear housing clamp. This should bring the speedo gear into contact with the output shaft of the transmission. The test on the clamp engage the slots in the outer edge of the gear housing.

Ah, thank you so much, Reed.

There are these two little holes in the shaft that made me think i might have lost a clip. I would not have thunk about the offset and the rotation, at all. This is why this forum is so helpful. Thanks again. I'll try it out and hope it works.

Indeed, i found that there are numbers stamped on the gear, "30", and on the assembly outside, there are also numbers, one of which is a range "26-31" so i lined up that indicator to the dimple.

Yes, it worked!

Thanks!

I believe there is a clip that helps hold the cable to the gear housing. But I could be wrong about that. I might be thinking about my Ford van.

Glad you got it fixed!

Yes, there's a clip there, that fits on the different angles it can be inserted.

Got my new windshield today too. I went and got my inspection, and i passed! Good for a year now!
