Does anyone know off hand if I can remove all the wires that attached to my Lean burn system plugs. Talking about where the actual harness plugs plugged into the lean burn over at the fender. I can wait until I have it running and remove them one by one, but I figured someone should have done this before me.

Is there anyplace on line to get the wiring diagrams for an 85 truck? I have a 1980 one and I am not sure it is the same.

Rick- send me your e-mail. I put together a diagram on how to remove the lean burn from a truck and I included the scans from a 1986 FSM. The lean burn wiring harness is actually fairly easy to separate from the main wiring harness. You have to unwrap the engine compartment loom, but ultimately the lean burn wiring harness traces down to one splice into the big (+) feed "spider" and some unboltable grounds.

The lean burn harness runs only to the sensors used by and devices controlled by the computer. The only snag is that the computer controls the AC clutch and idle stop solenoid (if your truck is so equipped). You can use a relay and rewire those circuits fairly easily, though.

The orange highlighted wires are the lean burn system. Trace them carefully and you see that it is largely a stand alone system.

Is your computer located behind the battery? My 86 was.
I was able to eliminate 15 of the 20 wires attached to the computer, the other 5 were used for the HEI convwersion.
5th wire is a ground for the HEI.
All is mounted in the original computer housing.

Reed to the rescue! That wiring diagram is what I used a few years ago to remove the unnecessary wires from my truck. There's a million feet of them. Makes it look less cluttered under the hood. But my wires were in such bad shape from melted/missing insulation (mice) that I ended up rewiring the whole truck from headlight to taillight.

One thing I remember from that project is there was a high level of frustration running down wires and unwrapping that electrical tape looking stuff. Best advice I can give you is: plan your work, and work your plan.

Yeah, you have to unwrap virtually the entire wiring harness. I have found it is easiest to start at the distributor since the wrap is usually loose there anyway due to oil saturation. But be prepared to spend a day unwrapping, carefully tracing and pulling wires, cleaning the remaining wires, then rewrapping and hopefully putting the wrapped wires in nice plastic looms. Time consuming, but rewarding.

When I rewired my truck I marked what i wanted to keep with masking tape and marker so i would know where it went.
I then pulled the entire harness out of the truck and removed what i didn't want.
Much faster then laying over fender trying to unwrap that $#!+ and trace wires.
Plus if you need to replace any wires, very easy to do.
