Just wondering best position for a 4 barrel carb on an intake manifold.
Is it best to have primary's close to engine or further away?
The carb sits sideways not front to back. It's on a Clifford manifold.

Thanks,
John

This is kind of more of a philosophical question because the short ram manifold doesn't care as much... it can go either way and function perfectly fine...if it goes front to back, at least you can use a stock accelerator cable and it's easier to install... You won't see much issue going fender to fender...other than making the brackets work and getting a longer cable to reach to the proper side.

I've run an offy both ways and never saw a difference, the clifford should be the same (but should allow for more flow power due to better runner size if the engine is matched for it...)

If you were to use a long ram intake then going fender to fender with the primaries toward the head does help make tuning easier (and if you split the manifold 1-2-3/4-5-6 then you will have to run it that way to get a primary and secondary to each 'set' of runners).

Thanks for the advice. So when you say tuning , what do you mean ( jetting, power valve, idle) ? I'm going to go with the primary away from the engine. Wonder if it will add a bit more "ram" effect?

If you run a divider through the middle of the manifold you can tune the engine more like a V engine (and you may find the engine runs better in an unsquare configuration depending on if it's the front 3 or "back" 3 cylinders because they are isolated... mostly jetting and idle settings).

You won't see any ram effect on the shorty...the only time I've seen "more" umph out of the clifford, the owner put a 4" spacer under the carb...then things really woke up (but they had a truck with enough room to use that much stack....). You may see a better mix in each cylinder if you are in the primaries...but when the secondaries open be prepared to see the outer cylinders be a little leaner than the middle 4.
