I noticed when about to cold start, the choke closes almost completely to about an 1/8" or so. Soon as the motor starts, the choke opens completely. It appears the vacuum operated 'pulloff' is pulling it open.

The question is how should choke events transpire at cold start?

That sounds close. The choke should close completely when the engine is cold and the throttle is opened. Upon engine start the choke should be pulled roughly 1/8-1/4 inch open. Specs will vary based on vehicle application.

It's getting pulled open the whole way. Also, I noticed my fast idle wasn't working this morning. Choke misadjusted?

I have been trying to dial in the third party electric choke kit.

The fast idle isn't working because the fast idle cam is attached to the choke plate. If the choke plate is pulled all the way open the fast idle cam is moved completely out from under the fast idle speed screw.

It sounds like the choke vacuum pulloff is misadjusted. Consult the carb manual to get the proper setting. The setting will be the same for the stock choke thermostat or a third party choke thermostat.

Adjust pull or push force of electric choke rod to snugly close choke butterfly if electric heater is divorced from carburetor. If round dial type of heater attached to carburetor turn in direction of +. The more force exerted by choke heater keeping butterfly closed, the slower choke will open. You will have to fiddle around with its adjustment for a few cold starts to dial it in.

When I set up the Carbonyl choke kit on my brother's van, I just went out one cold morning and dusted it so the choke just barely fully closed. It has worked beautifully ever since for the last few years. No readjustment necessary.

thanks, haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but it seems the vacuum pulloff has much more force than the choke.

The first thing I'm going to check is the pulloff...I may have installed an incorrect PN. So many carb parts lying around!

The vacuum pulloff was misadjusted. The rod was too short. Still dialing in the electric choke, but running pretty nice right now. Thanks to all who responded.
