My 70 Dart 225 is on its third alternator. When the second one went out, it was putting out 11.5 volts or something like that. Found the receipt and got another one. Put it in and was running at 14. For two days. Now it is running at 12 and the lights are getting dimmer. It appears to be running off the battery at this point. I am going in tomorrow to get another with my receipt. Are these just crap alternators or is there something else going on? I replaced the voltage regulator during the first install. Please advise! Thanks!

"Remanufactured" alternators from a parts store are almost always unreliable junk. So do today's generally-available voltage regulators.

Get a new Chrysler alternator and a good voltage regulator from Old Car Parts Northwest.

Ain't it interesting how that "Lifetime Warranty" isn't worth squat, if you have to replace the part every 4-6 months?

Dan's right, though. You'd be better off to score an original from a salvage yard, and pay the extra bucks to have someone local refurbish it with new internals, (diodes, bearings & brushes).

Even worse than installing 10 Alternators is installing multiple Master cylinders. Even if they are "free" my time and hassle are worth something!

After second "free" one I went in and said I want a "new" not rebuilt one. They couldn't believe I actually wanted to pay the difference to obtain one that would actually work longer than 6 months!

Out of the frying pan (junk thrown together at the "remanufacturing" plant) and into the fire (100% new junk thrown together in China).

For cars like ours, you cannot get an alternator worth using at a parts store.

On a related issue, I have three or four original Mopar alternators that need rebuilds Some have bad bearings, some have bad diodes, etc... Is anyone aware of a source for rebuild kits for the dual-field alternator? Or am I better of just taking them to a local starter motor rebuild house and having them rebuilt?

A "rebuild kit" packaged up as such for consumer purchase is going to contain trinkets shaped like parts. If you really want to do it yourself, see if you can hunt up a starter-alternator rebuilding house near you that will order you the necessary parts. If not, there are a few such outfits selling on eBay, such as Triodiode.

FWIW, I bought some pieces from Triodiode for a N/D alternator that I put on my T. Put them in myself, following the directions that he was good enough to send with the self-exciting regulator, and had it checked out at a local shop. Alternator rated at 65 amps, pulled 80 on the test. Still running on the T, but haven't been driving it much due to weather.

I say Trio is a good seller/supplier.
