I'm planning no installing a disc brake conversion kit on my 68 Dart 270 and the minimum required wheel size is 14". I was looking at getting some 15x8 wheels to replace my 13s but a friend was telling me to go with a 17x8 because it is easier to find tires. It looks like a 4.5" backspacing was what is recommended but I wanted to get opinions on all of this before I start buying stuff.

I am planning on using adapters on the rear wheels for now as I have plans to swap in a Ford 8.8 later on that will add discs and the appropriate bolt pattern

Also what size tires should I mount on these?

All this is up in the air so feel free to point me in another direction if you have any ideas. This is mostly a daily driver but I do want to do some Autocross in the future.

A 17x8" wheel will fit, but I'm not sure 4.5" is enough backspacing. I tried to use Cragar Soft 8s in that exact same size, but they wouldn't clear the sheet metal in the back. They fit on the front, but the edge of the tire was right in line with the bodywork, and I had to trim the fenders on the lower front corner of the wheel well to avoid the tires rubbing at full steering lock. This was with 225-45-17 tires.

Granted, this was all on a '64 Dart. Your '68 might have more room. Don't quote me on this, but for my car, I think about another inch of backspacing would be perfect (so 5.5" backspacing or 1" offset for a 8" wide wheel). This is assuming your rear axle is already large bolt pattern. If you have to use a bolt pattern adapter on the rear, you'll need even more backspacing, and then you might need spacers up front to run the same wheels without rubbing on the inside. Then again, your front offset might be totally different from mine. I did an M-body swap, not an aftermarket kit.

The ram man has factory style mopar disk brakes that fit 14" wheels, 15" for sure.

I've seen 17" wheels on a '68 Dart but I didn't get the exact specifications at the time, sorry.

I have 14x6 craigers with 205/70R14's on the front of my 67 Valiant, the passenger tire hits the rear of the wheel well when turning hard left.

What was the backspacing on those wheels?

I don't know I never measured the back spacing

4.25" is stock back space on stock 14x7" cop car wheels and works well. Stock Mustang wheels will hit rear springs if in stock position. Many after market 15x8" wheels have 3.75 BS which works well in back but messes up geometry of front end.

This photo shows 69 with BBP 15x7 with 4.25" bs on rear and 15x6 w/4"bs (stock F body) on front. It works well but would like to have rears sit out 1/2" more. Studs are too short for spacers, and so far, two different after market sets of longer lug studs have failed to fit holes in flange. One was too small for Mopar 8 1/4 rear and another too large for current Ford 8" rear. Both were advertised to work.
